Chapter 6 - The Choice That Changed Adrian DeMarco

Victor Soren expected retaliation.

Instead, Adrian gave him something far more dangerous.

Evidence.

The ledger was copied.

Financial records went to federal investigators.

Blackmail files went to attorneys representing Soren’s victims.

Documents tying Soren to kidnappings, extortion, and corrupt businesses reached prosecutors simultaneously.

Three days later, Soren called Adrian.

“You've lost your mind.”

Adrian stood beside his office window.

“No.”

“You handed outsiders our business.”

“I handed them yours.”

“You think this makes you clean?”

“No.”

Adrian’s voice remained calm.

“But it makes you finished.”

“You did this because of that woman?”

Adrian looked across the room.

Olivia was helping Noah assemble a wooden birdhouse.

“No.”

Soren laughed.

“Don't lie.”

Adrian watched Olivia smile at something Noah said.

Then he answered.

“I did it because she reminded me there are things more important than winning.”

Soren was arrested two days later.

The organization around him fractured.

For the first time in years, Adrian began dismantling parts of his own empire too.

Not overnight.

Not magically.

But deliberately.

Businesses built entirely on fear were closed.

People being held through debts were released.

Legitimate companies were separated from everything else.

His oldest lieutenant, Marco Bell, confronted him.

“You're changing everything.”

“Yes.”

“For her?”

Adrian shook his head.

“Because she showed me what everything looked like from outside.”

Marco stared at him.

“And what did it look like?”

Adrian answered quietly.

“Empty.”

That evening, Adrian found Olivia on his terrace.

“You're staring dramatically into the distance again,” she said.

“I was thinking.”

“Same thing with you.”

He stood beside her.

“Soren won't be coming back.”

“I heard.”

“You and Noah can go home tomorrow.”

Olivia looked at him.

“You sound like you want us gone.”

“I want you safe.”

“Those aren't the same thing.”

Adrian said nothing.

Olivia faced him.

“Do you want me to leave?”

His composure finally cracked.

“No.”

It was the simplest answer he had ever given her.

She stepped closer.

“Then ask me to stay for dinner.”

Adrian stared.

“Dinner?”

“Yes.”

“You've been living here for a week.”

“And somehow you've never actually asked me to dinner.”

“Olivia—”

“Try.”

Adrian almost smiled.

“Would you have dinner with me?”

She pretended to consider.

“Depends.”

“On?”

“Blueberry muffins.”

He laughed.

Actually laughed.

From inside, Noah appeared at the door.

“Olivia!”

“What?”

“The muffin man is laughing.”

“I can see that.”

“Is he sick?”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Olivia laughed harder.

May you like

And for once, Adrian didn't mind being laughed at.
