Chapter 4 - Room 614

At 3:41 a.m., Greyhaven Memorial looked almost peaceful.
Evelyn knew better.
Dominic’s SUV stopped across the street.
“You’re not walking into the hospital with six men,” she said.
“Why?”
“Because subtlety exists.”
“I’ve heard rumors.”
“Dominic.”
He glanced at her.
“You and Luca. That's it.”
“You’re giving orders now?”
“I know this building. You don’t.”
Dominic considered it.
“Fine.”
Luca looked offended.
“Boss?”
“Stay with the car.”
“But—”
“She knows the building.”
Luca stared at Evelyn.
She smiled.
“Subtlety.”
He muttered something in Italian.
---
Evelyn entered through the employee parking garage wearing borrowed scrubs.
Dominic followed in dark clothes beneath a medical transport jacket.
“You look ridiculous,” she whispered.
“I've been called worse.”
They reached the sixth floor.
Room 614 stood empty.
Evelyn locked the door.
Dominic moved to the oxygen panel.
“Here?”
“Yes.”
He removed the cover.
Behind it sat a plastic bag.
Inside were two flash drives and a thick envelope.
Evelyn exhaled.
“We got it.”
“Not yet.”
A voice came from behind them.
“No.”
Evelyn froze.
Grant Holloway stood in the doorway.
Two hospital security officers were behind him.
Grant was fifty-three, polished, silver-haired and wearing a suit that probably cost more than Evelyn’s car.
He smiled.
“Ms. Whitmore.”
Dominic stepped between them.
Grant’s smile disappeared.
“Mr. Valtieri.”
“You know me?”
“Everyone does.”
Dominic looked at the security officers.
“Then everyone should understand that entering this room would be unwise.”
Grant raised a hand.
The guards stayed outside.
He looked at Evelyn.
“You've caused remarkable trouble.”
“Forty-three patients.”
Grant sighed.
“You don’t understand hospital economics.”
“I understand medication administration.”
“You understand bedside nursing.”
“And apparently your accounting.”
His expression hardened.
“Give me the drives.”
“No.”
Grant looked toward Dominic.
“This woman is making accusations she cannot prove.”
Evelyn held up the bag.
“I can now.”
Grant smiled again.
“Can you?”
Evelyn’s confidence faltered.
“What does that mean?”
Grant reached into his pocket and removed his phone.
“Check the drive.”
Dominic looked at Evelyn.
She opened the bag.
The flash drives were there.
But one was cracked.
The second had been drilled through.
“No.”
Grant smiled.
“Evidence is fragile.”
Evelyn stared at Palmer’s envelope.
She opened it.
Empty paper.
Grant chuckled.
“Dr. Palmer has always been unreliable.”
Evelyn’s face fell.
Dominic remained strangely calm.
Grant noticed.
“Something amusing?”
“No.”
“Then why are you smiling?”
Dominic looked at Evelyn.
“You told me something yesterday.”
“What?”
“You said they made one mistake.”
Grant’s expression shifted.
Dominic continued.
“They assumed you kept only one copy.”
Evelyn suddenly understood.
She looked at Grant.
Then smiled.
Grant’s face changed.
“What?”
Evelyn reached beneath the bracelet on her wrist.
The compass charm opened.
Inside was a tiny memory card.
Grant stared.
“My grandmother taught me to keep important things close.”
“You're bluffing.”
“No.”
The card contained only a portion of her evidence.
But Grant didn't know that.
His calm finally cracked.
“You stupid little—”
“Careful,” Dominic said.
Grant stopped.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Forty-three patients.”
“You have no idea what you're dealing with.”
“Then explain it.”
“You think I created this?”
Grant laughed.
“I’m an employee.”
Dominic’s eyes narrowed.
“Whose?”
Grant looked toward the hallway.
Then smiled.
“The man who owns this hospital.”
Evelyn frowned.
“The board owns it.”
“No.”
Grant leaned toward her.
“The board owns the building.”
He tapped the broken drives.
“Someone else owns the people.”
Suddenly the fire alarm began screaming.
Dominic looked toward the hallway.
Luca’s voice came through his earpiece.
“Boss, move. Now.”
Smoke appeared beneath the door.
Grant stepped backward.
Evelyn stared at him.
“You started a fire?”
Grant smiled.
May you like
“I told you.”
“Evidence is fragile.”
