Chapter 5 - The Wedding That Never Reached “I Do”

The Grand Halcyon looked like a palace built specifically for people who wanted strangers to know they had money.

Crystal chandeliers.

White roses.

Champagne towers.

Nearly three hundred guests.

Rachel entered beside me.

Samuel followed.

Lily slept against my shoulder in a white outfit, one tiny hand tucked beneath her chin.

Rachel looked at me.

“Last chance.”

“To leave?”

“To hand Lily to the nanny upstairs.”

“No.”

“Claire.”

“If Richard knows about her, she stays with me.”

Fair enough.

The ballroom went quiet when I entered.

Not gradually.

Instantly.

Adrian stood near the altar in a black tuxedo.

His mouth actually opened.

Vanessa stood beside him in her wedding gown.

She looked less surprised.

Richard Marlowe looked furious.

Adrian walked toward me.

“What the hell are you doing here?”

I held up the invitation.

“You invited me.”

“Not with a baby.”

“Interesting distinction.”

His eyes moved to Lily.

For half a second, something flickered across his face.

Recognition without understanding.

Then he looked at Rachel.

“Why is your divorce lawyer here?”

Rachel smiled politely.

“I enjoy weddings.”

“Claire.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“Leave.”

Richard appeared behind him.

“No.”

Adrian turned.

“What?”

Richard’s smile was controlled.

“She should stay.”

That told me everything.

The ceremony began twelve minutes later.

Vanessa walked down the aisle.

Adrian kept looking toward me.

Then toward Lily.

He couldn’t stop.

The officiant began.

Richard watched from the front row.

Rachel checked her phone.

We were waiting for one message.

The investigators had received Samuel’s records that morning.

But the marriage had to be stopped before the voting agreements activated.

The officiant reached the vows.

“Adrian Cole, do you—”

“Wait.”

Vanessa’s voice echoed through the ballroom.

Adrian stared at her.

“What?”

Vanessa turned toward her father.

“I’m not signing it.”

Richard stood.

“Vanessa.”

“No.”

Guests began whispering.

Adrian looked completely lost.

“Signing what?”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You really don’t know?”

“Know what?”

“The marriage agreement gives my father voting control through my shares.”

Adrian turned toward Richard.

“You told me that was temporary.”

“It is.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. It isn’t.”

Richard stepped forward.

“This is neither the time nor place.”

I spoke from the aisle.

“Actually, I think this is exactly the place.”

Every head turned.

Adrian’s face hardened.

“Claire, stay out of this.”

I handed Lily carefully to Rachel.

Then I walked forward holding a manila envelope.

The room in the photograph would later be described online as silent.

It wasn’t.

People whispered.

Someone dropped a fork.

A woman near the aisle actually gasped when I passed.

I stopped in front of Adrian.

“You told the court Cole Meridian was nearly broke.”

His face changed.

“Not here.”

“You told the court your compensation had collapsed.”

“Claire.”

“You deferred $2.4 million until thirty days after our settlement.”

Richard interrupted.

“That allegation is absurd.”

I turned toward him.

“Then you’ll enjoy explaining the Strategic Executive Retention Reserve.”

His expression froze.

I continued.

“And Project Legacy.”

Now the room truly became quiet.

Adrian looked at Richard.

“What does she know?”

Vanessa answered.

“Everything.”

Richard snapped, “Vanessa, enough.”

“No, Dad.”

She removed her engagement ring.

“You used me.”

She placed it on the table.

“And you used him.”

Adrian looked at me.

“What is Project Legacy?”

I stared at him.

“You signed it.”

“I signed a restructuring authorization.”

“You authorized $7.8 million to Vanessa’s family company.”

Adrian went pale.

“That wasn’t what I signed.”

Samuel stepped forward.

“Yes, it was.”

Adrian recognized him.

“Samuel?”

“Your father tried to stop this before he died.”

Richard started toward the exit.

Two men in plain clothes entered the ballroom.

Then another pair.

Not dramatic.

No shouting.

Just badges.

Federal financial investigators accompanied by counsel serving preservation orders and subpoenas related to Cole Meridian records.

Rachel’s phone buzzed.

She showed me.

Order granted. Records preserved. Trust transactions temporarily frozen.

Richard stopped walking.

Adrian stared around his own wedding.

Then he looked at Lily again.

She had awakened.

Rachel was holding her.

Lily stared directly at Adrian.

His face changed.

Slowly.

He looked at me.

Then Lily.

Then me again.

“Claire.”

I said nothing.

His voice barely carried.

“How old is she?”

My throat tightened.

“Seven weeks.”

He calculated.

I watched him do it.

His lips parted.

“No.”

I didn’t move.

“Claire…”

The anger disappeared from his face.

Everything disappeared except shock.

He walked toward Rachel but stopped several feet away.

“Is she…”

I answered quietly.

“Her name is Lily.”

Adrian stared at his daughter.

The ballroom, the wedding, the investigators—everything seemed to vanish around him.

“Is she mine?”

I looked directly at the man who had spent years telling me I couldn’t give him a family.

“Yes.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

When he opened them again, they were wet.

“You had my daughter?”

“No, Adrian.”

I stepped between him and Lily.

May you like

“I have my daughter.”
