Chapter 7 - The Clock Started Again

One year later, Patrick Donovan walked into a Gamblers Anonymous meeting.
Claire wasn't there.
She had stopped measuring her healing by whether her father changed.
That was his responsibility.
Her life belonged to her.
Blackstone Terminal had changed too.
The eastern platform became the Donovan Foundation for Financial Recovery, offering legal assistance and temporary housing to families trapped by predatory debt.
Claire ran it.
Damian funded it.
Evelyn controlled everyone.
On opening night, Claire stood beneath the enormous station clock.
Reporters filled the terminal.
Damian approached quietly.
"You ready?"
"No."
"Good."
Claire smiled.
"Terrible motivational speech."
"I'm a criminal, not a therapist."
"Allegedly."
"Of course."
Claire looked up.
The clock still read 11:17.
She took Damian's hand.
"Fix it."
His expression changed.
"Claire."
"Your sister deserves to be remembered."
She squeezed his fingers.
"But you don't have to keep living inside the minute she died."
Damian stared at the clock.
Then at Claire.
Finally, he nodded.
An electrician activated the restored mechanism.
The second hand moved.
Tick.
Claire felt Damian's fingers tighten around hers.
11:18.
For the first time in decades, time moved forward inside Blackstone Terminal.
Damian looked at her.
"Stay with me tonight."
Claire smiled.
"I live here."
"You know what I mean."
She did.
A year earlier, she'd entered this building believing she had been purchased.
Now her name was on an office downstairs.
Her own bank account held more money than she'd ever imagined.
Her apartment remained hers, even though she rarely used it.
And the man beside her had never once asked her to repay the price he'd supposedly paid.
Claire rested her head briefly against his shoulder.
"Yes."
"Yes what?"
"I'll stay."
Damian smiled.
Outside, a train sounded somewhere beyond the hills.
The old station clock continued moving.
And Claire realized something she wished she'd understood years earlier.
Family wasn't the person who claimed ownership over you.
May you like
Family was the person who opened the door—
and trusted you to decide whether to stay.
