Chapter 5 - Chloe Crossed the Line

Chloe was sitting in a conference room when I arrived.

Daniel was there.

So was HR Director Melissa Grant.

Chloe jumped up.

“Emma.”

I remained by the door.

Melissa spoke first.

“Ms. Bennett, your sister has not participated in this investigation.”

Chloe glared at me.

“Of course she has.”

“No,” Melissa said firmly. “She specifically recused herself.”

Chloe sat back down.

Melissa opened a laptop.

“At 3:16 p.m., your employee credentials were used to access an internal executive directory.”

“I was curious.”

“That directory is permitted.”

Chloe relaxed.

“Then what’s the problem?”

“At 3:19, you attempted to open confidential executive compensation records.”

Chloe said nothing.

“At 3:22, you attempted to access CEO transition files.”

“I clicked the wrong folder.”

“Seven times?”

Silence.

Melissa continued.

“At 3:31, you photographed information displayed on a restricted workstation.”

“I didn’t.”

Daniel placed a printed security image on the table.

Chloe holding her phone toward a monitor.

Her face collapsed.

I finally spoke.

“Why?”

She looked at me.

“You wouldn’t help me.”

“With what?”

“My job.”

“You already had the job.”

“I knew HR was investigating.”

“So you tried to find information about me?”

“I needed leverage.”

The room went completely silent.

I stared at my sister.

“Leverage?”

She realized what she had admitted.

“I didn’t mean—”

“What were you planning to do?”

“Nothing.”

“Chloe.”

She started crying.

“I just wanted you to make the investigation disappear.”

Melissa closed the folder.

“Ms. Bennett, this meeting is concluded.”

Chloe looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

“Your employment is terminated effective immediately.”

“No.”

“Security will escort you to collect your belongings.”

Chloe turned toward me.

“Emma, do something.”

I didn’t move.

“Please.”

“You asked me not to interfere when you thought I was against you.”

“This is different.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“It isn’t.”

“You’re going to let them fire your own sister?”

“You fired yourself.”

Her face twisted.

“You wanted this.”

“No, Chloe.”

For once, my voice softened.

“I wanted you to succeed.”

She stared at me.

“I approved the budget that created your position before I knew you were applying.”

Her mouth opened.

“I didn’t hire you. I didn’t influence your interview. But when I saw your name on the final list, I was proud.”

Chloe’s anger disappeared.

“You were?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I wanted you to have something that belonged to you.”

Tears rolled down her face.

I continued.

“But instead of building it, you spent your first day trying to use me.”

She looked down.

Security arrived.

Chloe stood.

Before leaving, she whispered, “Mom and Dad are going to hate you.”

I answered quietly.

“They can make their own choices.”

That evening, Dad called.

He shouted for three straight minutes.

“You destroyed your sister’s career!”

“I didn’t fire her.”

“You could reverse it!”

“I won’t.”

“You owe this family.”

“No.”

The word stopped him.

“What did you say?”

“I said no.”

“You wouldn’t be where you are without us.”

I thought about Grandma Evelyn.

About scholarships.

Night classes.

Fourteen-hour workdays.

Years of being ignored at family dinners.

“Dad, name one thing about my career.”

“What?”

“Name my last job title before CEO.”

Silence.

“What division did I run?”

Nothing.

“How many countries does Harrington operate in?”

“Emma, this is ridiculous.”

“No. It’s simple.”

I waited.

“You say you made me. But you don’t even know what I made.”

He hung up.

For three weeks, I heard almost nothing from my family.

Then one Friday afternoon, Chloe appeared in the lobby of Harrington Global.

No appointment.

No expensive outfit.

No attitude.

She handed the receptionist an envelope.

“For Emma.”

Inside was one handwritten sentence.

I don’t want my job back. I want to know how to become someone who deserves one.

May you like

For the first time, I wondered if losing everything had finally taught my sister something winning never had.
