Chapter 3 - Twelve Black Cars

Nora barely slept.

At 9:06 the next morning, she returned to the Calder Hotel carrying an empty cardboard box.

Charles had texted her before sunrise.

Collect your belongings before noon.

Nothing else.

No apology.

No explanation.

Nora intended to collect her shoes, locker key, and spare uniform.

Then disappear.

She had barely stepped into the lobby when Sebastian’s voice reached her.

“Back already?”

He sat near the windows with the same two friends from the night before.

Coffee.

Designer clothes.

No consequences.

Nora ignored him.

Charles came out of his office.

“Wait by the desk.”

“Why?”

“I need you to sign termination paperwork.”

“I resigned.”

“We’re documenting the incident.”

“Of course you are.”

Sebastian smiled over his cup.

Charles lowered his voice.

“Don’t start.”

Nora looked at him.

“I haven’t said anything.”

“That has never stopped you before.”

She almost responded.

Then the revolving doors stopped.

A black Mercedes had pulled beneath the awning.

Another stopped behind it.

Then a third.

Customers turned toward the windows.

Four.

Five.

Six.

Charles stepped toward the glass.

“What is this?”

The cars continued arriving.

Nine.

Ten.

Eleven.

Twelve.

The entire hotel entrance disappeared behind polished black vehicles.

Men in dark suits stepped onto the pavement.

No one rushed.

No one shouted.

They simply took positions.

Two by the entrance.

Several near the vehicles.

Others scanning the street.

The lobby became completely silent.

Sebastian slowly stood.

One of his friends whispered, “Oh, hell.”

The center vehicle opened.

Vivian stepped out.

This time she wore a cream coat and dark glasses.

Her broken shoe was gone.

So was the frightened posture from the previous night.

A tall man exited behind her.

Late thirties.

Broad shoulders.

Black overcoat.

Dark hair.

A scar cut faintly through one eyebrow.

When he adjusted his cuff, black tattoos showed across his fingers and disappeared beneath the sleeve.

Sebastian’s face drained.

Nora looked at him.

“You know him?”

Sebastian did not answer.

His friend did.

“That’s Matteo Moretti.”

Nora had heard the name.

Everyone in Chicago had.

Publicly, Matteo Moretti controlled logistics firms, construction businesses, restaurants, and private security companies.

Privately, people lowered their voices.

The word mafia was rarely said directly.

It did not need to be.

Matteo entered the lobby beside Vivian.

He did not hold her arm.

He did not guide her.

He walked half a step behind and let her choose her own path.

Nora noticed immediately.

Vivian stopped.

Matteo looked around the lobby.

“Which one is Sebastian Vale?”

Sebastian stepped forward too quickly.

“This has been completely misunderstood.”

Matteo looked toward his sister.

“Has it?”

Vivian answered.

“No.”

Matteo nodded once.

“Tell me.”

Sebastian started talking.

“Actually—”

Matteo did not look at him.

“I asked my sister.”

Sebastian closed his mouth.

Vivian described everything.

The phone.

The wrist.

The filming.

The broken heel.

Leonard’s hesitation.

Charles ordering Nora to apologize.

Nora’s resignation.

When Vivian finished, Matteo finally looked at Sebastian.

Sebastian forced a smile.

“It was a joke.”

Vivian spoke.

“I told you to stop.”

“You slapped me.”

“After you grabbed me.”

Sebastian looked at Matteo.

“You know how these things get exaggerated.”

Matteo’s face remained completely calm.

“No.”

Sebastian’s smile disappeared.

Charles stepped forward.

“Mr. Moretti, I want to assure you the Calder takes guest safety very seriously.”

Nora laughed.

She tried not to.

She failed.

The entire lobby turned toward her.

Charles looked furious.

Vivian smiled.

“There she is.”

She walked toward Nora.

“You came.”

“For my shoes.”

Matteo followed.

He looked at the cardboard box.

Then at Nora.

“My sister told me what you did.”

“I didn’t do much.”

“You lost your job.”

“I quit.”

Vivian added, “Very dramatically.”

Nora looked at her.

“I was having a bad night.”

Matteo’s mouth almost moved.

Almost.

Then he turned toward Charles.

“Is camera twelve operational?”

Charles swallowed.

“Yes.”

“I want the footage preserved.”

Sebastian stepped forward.

“You don’t control this hotel.”

Matteo looked at Vivian.

“What do you want?”

The question stopped everyone.

Nora expected Matteo to make the decision.

He didn’t.

Vivian took a moment.

“I want Sebastian banned from the Calder.”

Charles flinched.

Vivian continued.

“I want the recording preserved.”

Matteo nodded.

“And every employee working with guests should receive actual disability-awareness and harassment-response training.”

Matteo waited.

“Anything else?”

“Yes.”

Vivian turned toward Nora.

“I want her suspension reversed.”

Nora immediately shook her head.

“No.”

Charles blinked.

Vivian laughed.

“You’re rejecting your job before they offer it back?”

“I know what this place is now.”

Matteo watched her.

Sebastian began moving toward the revolving doors.

Several suited men looked toward Matteo.

He gave no order.

Nobody touched Sebastian.

Vivian heard his footsteps.

“Let him leave.”

Sebastian froze.

Vivian turned toward his voice.

“I don’t need my brother to punish you.”

She lifted her damaged phone.

“I have the original recording.”

Sebastian’s face changed.

Vivian continued.

“You wanted to make me content.”

She placed the phone inside her purse.

May you like

“Now I’ll tell the story myself.”

Sebastian left without another word.
