Chapter 5 - My Brother’s Last Move

The evidence inside Luca’s safe was devastating.

Not rumors.

Not suspicions.

Records.

Transfers.

Audio files.

Signed authorizations.

Payments made to intermediaries connected to deaths that had been labeled accidents.

And a list titled:

THE SHADOW COUNCIL

Victor Vale’s name appeared first.

Harrison Crowe was second.

Adrian Cross was seventh.

There were eleven names in total.

Several still held senior positions inside Vale Global.

Mateo looked through the files.

“This could bring down half the board.”

“Then half the board goes down.”

Clara studied me.

“And Vale Global?”

“I don’t know.”

“You could lose everything.”

I looked at Emma.

She was sitting on an old crate drawing another wolf.

“No.”

I picked up the missing journal page.

“I almost lost everything thirteen years ago.”

The page contained a message in Luca’s handwriting.

Sebastian, if you find this, don’t avenge me. Finish what I couldn’t. Protect the innocent people whose lives our family treated like numbers. And if my child exists, give her something better than the name we inherited.

I stopped reading.

Clara touched my arm.

“There’s more.”

I continued.

You always thought strength meant holding the empire together. Sometimes strength means tearing out the rotten beams before the whole house falls.

I laughed quietly.

“That sounds like him.”

Clara smiled through tears.

“He never stopped believing you’d do the right thing.”

“He hid from me.”

“He hid from everyone.”

“Because he didn’t trust me.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“Because he wanted you alive.”

That silenced me.

Police vehicles surrounded the warehouse outside.

Mateo approached.

“Cross is talking.”

“Already?”

“He knows Victor will abandon him.”

“What did he say?”

“The operation against Emma was only part of it. Victor planned to force an emergency board vote tomorrow morning.”

“For what?”

“To remove you.”

I looked at Harrison’s files.

Of course.

Emma’s existence threatened the trusts.

My recognition of her threatened Victor.

The evidence threatened everyone.

“So tomorrow morning still matters.”

Mateo nodded.

“We can cancel the meeting.”

“No.”

Clara looked at me.

“Why would you walk into another trap?”

“Because Victor spent thirteen years hiding behind private rooms.”

I closed the safe.

“Tomorrow he answers in public.”

At 9:00 the next morning, the Vale Global boardroom was full.

Directors.

Attorneys.

Trust administrators.

Outside auditors.

And, at my insistence, independent federal investigators waiting in an adjacent room.

Victor walked in escorted by security.

He looked at the crowd.

Then at me.

“You’ve turned this into theater.”

“No.”

I activated the main screen.

“This is an audit.”

Names appeared.

Accounts.

Payments.

Dates.

One director stood.

“What is this?”

“Evidence collected by Luca Vale.”

Murmurs spread around the room.

Victor raised his voice.

“My nephew was mentally unstable.”

The door opened.

Clara entered.

Then Emma.

Victor’s expression changed.

Emma wore a mustard-yellow dress beneath a white cardigan.

Her notebook was in her hands.

I walked to her.

“This is Emma Morgan Vale.”

The room went silent.

“DNA testing confirms she is Luca’s daughter and my niece.”

One trustee stood.

“If that is legally verified—”

“It is.”

He looked at Victor.

“Then the Luca Vale branch remains active.”

Victor snapped, “Sit down.”

Nobody moved.

I continued.

“Effective this morning, I have formally recognized Emma as a direct member of the Vale family line and placed her inheritance under an independent protected trust.”

Victor’s face darkened.

“You cannot do this without the council.”

“After her sixth birthday, I can.”

His own rules had defeated him.

Then Harrison entered with investigators.

Victor finally lost his composure.

“You coward!”

Harrison wouldn’t look at him.

“I’m done burying people for you.”

Victor pointed toward me.

“You think these people will thank you? When Vale stock collapses? When thousands lose money?”

I walked closer.

“You spent decades convincing everyone that protecting the Vale name justified anything.”

“It built your life.”

“It killed my brother.”

Victor lowered his voice.

“Luca would have destroyed us.”

“No.”

I looked around the room.

“He was trying to save us from becoming you.”

The doors opened again.

Investigators entered.

Victor stared at me.

“You will regret this.”

Emma suddenly spoke.

“No, he won’t.”

Everyone looked at her.

She held up her notebook.

“My daddy said Uncle Sebastian fixes broken things.”

Victor had no answer.

May you like

Neither did I.

The investigators escorted him away.
