Chapter 3 - The Best Friend Who Stole Everything

Madison sank back into the chair.
Ethan remained standing across from her.
“Is Noah my son?”
She wiped tears from her cheek.
“He is your son in every way that matters.”
Ethan’s face twisted.
“That is not an answer.”
“He knows you as his father.”
“Is he biologically mine?”
Madison looked at Adrian.
“You can’t force me to discuss this.”
“No,” Adrian said. “But Ethan can request a legal paternity test.”
Ethan pulled out his phone.
“I’m calling my attorney.”
Madison stood again.
“Don’t do this here.”
“You did it here.”
“I didn’t plan for Claire to appear.”
I almost laughed.
That was the closest she had come to honesty.
“This was never about me appearing,” I said. “It was about you believing I would never fight back.”
Madison looked at me bitterly.
“You disappeared.”
“I was recovering.”
“You let everyone think we were right.”
“I stopped defending myself to people who had already chosen your version.”
Ethan lowered his phone.
“What exactly did you do?”
Madison glanced toward the door.
“I loved you.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
“I loved you before Claire married you.”
The statement landed between us.
I had suspected it for months, but hearing it aloud still felt unreal.
Madison and I had met in college. She had stood beside me at my wedding. She had helped me choose my dress. She had given a speech about how no two people were more suited for each other than Ethan and me.
Ethan looked disgusted.
“You were dating Daniel then.”
“I didn’t love Daniel.”
“So you destroyed my marriage because you wanted my house?”
“I wanted you.”
“You could have told me.”
“You would have rejected me.”
“You didn’t give me a choice.”
Madison’s expression hardened.
“Neither did Claire.”
I stared at her.
“How did I take away your choice?”
“You had everything.”
“My mother died when I was nineteen.”
“You had money.”
“My father stopped speaking to me when I married Ethan.”
“You had him.”
“You were my best friend.”
Madison gave a bitter laugh.
“You always said that like it was a gift.”
Ethan slammed his palm against the table.
“Enough. Tell me about the clinic.”
Noah whimpered.
Madison kissed his forehead, then spoke in a low voice.
“Victor Hale was Daniel’s uncle. I met him at a family dinner before Daniel and I broke up.”
Adrian’s expression tightened.
“You asked him to alter Claire’s records?”
“Not at first.”
“What did you ask him to do?”
Madison looked at me.
“I asked whether Ethan was the reason the treatments failed.”
My throat tightened.
“You accessed our medical information?”
“I was worried about you.”
“No. You were gathering ammunition.”
She lowered her eyes.
“Victor told me Ethan had severe fertility problems. He said your results were normal.”
Ethan’s voice became dangerously calm.
“And then?”
“I told him Claire would never leave you if she knew.”
“So you asked him to lie.”
“I asked him to protect you.”
“By blaming my wife?”
Madison flinched.
“You were already tired of the treatments. You told me you felt trapped.”
“I said I was frightened.”
“You said Claire had become obsessed.”
“I was talking to my wife’s best friend. I thought I could trust you.”
Madison began to shake.
“I thought once the marriage ended, we could start over.”
“What happened during the third cycle?”
She hesitated.
Adrian answered for her.
“The laboratory record shows that Dr. Hale personally delivered the sample. That violated protocol.”
Ethan stared at her.
“Whose sample was it?”
“I don’t know.”
“Madison.”
“I swear I don’t know.”
“Was it Victor’s?”
“No.”
“Daniel’s?”
Her eyes flickered.
Ethan saw it.
He stepped back slowly.
“No.”
Madison held Noah tighter.
“Daniel agreed to help.”
My stomach turned.
“Help with what?” I asked.
She whispered, “Creating a viable embryo.”
The room seemed to tilt.
Adrian’s voice remained controlled.
“Was the substituted sample used in Claire’s treatment?”
“Yes.”
I gripped the edge of the table.
“You tried to impregnate me with Daniel’s child?”
Madison shook her head frantically.
“No. Victor was supposed to make sure the cycle failed before transfer.”
Adrian’s eyes sharpened.
“That is not how the records read. An embryo was transferred.”
Madison froze.
“What?”
“The report shows one embryo reached transfer stage.”
“That’s impossible.”
I felt cold all over.
“Why?”
“Because Victor promised me it would be destroyed.”
Ethan looked sick.
“You were willing to create an embryo with your boyfriend’s sperm and my wife’s egg?”
“I wasn’t thinking clearly.”
“You planned it.”
“I was desperate.”
“For what?”
“To give you proof that Claire’s body was the problem.”
I stepped toward her.
“You gambled with my body so Ethan would leave me.”
Madison backed against the wall.
“I didn’t know Victor would transfer it.”
“But he did,” Adrian said.
I looked at him.
“You told me the cycle failed.”
“That is what your discharge summary said,” Adrian replied. “But the embryology record lists a transfer.”
Ethan’s gaze moved to my stomach, as though expecting an answer from the past.
“But Claire never became pregnant.”
Adrian’s silence made my pulse race.
“What aren’t you telling us?” I asked.
He opened the envelope again.
“There was a positive pregnancy test twelve days after the transfer.”
I could barely breathe.
“No. The clinic told me it was negative.”
“The result was changed in your patient portal.”
Madison whispered, “Victor said he handled it.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Claire, did you experience bleeding or severe abdominal pain after that cycle?”
“Yes. Two weeks later.”
“How severe?”
“I collapsed in my apartment. Ethan was away. Madison took me to a private urgent-care center.”
Every eye turned toward her.
Madison began shaking her head.
“No.”
“You chose the clinic,” I said.
“I was trying to help.”
“You told the doctor I had a heavy menstrual cycle.”
“You were bleeding.”
“I asked whether I could be pregnant.”
Madison covered her mouth.
Adrian looked at me with quiet pain.
“You may have suffered an early miscarriage without being told you were pregnant.”
The words cut deeper than Ethan’s insults ever had.
A child had existed.
For only a short time, perhaps, but long enough to become part of my body.
And Madison had erased that child to protect her lie.
Ethan moved toward me.
“Claire—”
“Don’t touch me.”
He stopped.
Madison was crying openly now.
“I didn’t know.”
“You made sure I couldn’t know.”
“I was afraid.”
“So was I,” I said. “I woke up every day believing I had killed our future.”
Ethan turned on her.
“You watched her suffer.”
Madison screamed back, “You left her!”
The accusation silenced him.
“You signed the divorce papers,” she continued. “You moved into my apartment. You told everyone she was broken. Don’t stand there pretending I did this alone.”
Ethan looked at me.
For the first time, I saw shame in his face.
But shame was not justice.
Adrian placed a business card on the table.
“The hospital has opened a formal investigation. Dr. Hale has been located. Claire’s attorney has already been notified.”
Madison stared at me.
“You have an attorney?”
“Yes.”
“For what?”
I looked at Ethan.
“For the house, the foundation, medical fraud, defamation, and everything else you stole while I was too devastated to defend myself.”
Ethan’s voice dropped.
May you like
“You’re suing us?”
“No,” I said. “I’m exposing you.”
