Chapter 3 - The Woman Who Survived

Elena Cross looked nothing like the woman in Adrian’s photograph.

She looked exhausted.

A bandage covered one side of her forehead.

Bruises marked her wrist.

But when Ruby entered the hospital room, Elena sat up immediately.

“Ruby.”

“Mom!”

Ruby ran into her arms.

Elena held her so tightly the girl squeaked.

“You found him?”

Ruby nodded toward me.

“Uncle Dante.”

Elena’s face changed.

Fear.

Relief.

Then shame.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For everything.”

I closed the door.

Noah waited outside with Marco.

I pulled a chair closer.

“Tell me about Victor.”

Elena looked at Ruby.

“Baby, can you go sit with Noah?”

Ruby shook her head.

“I’m staying.”

Elena tried again.

“Ruby.”

“No.”

I almost smiled.

Adrian’s child.

Definitely.

Elena sighed.

“Fine.”

I leaned forward.

“Start at the beginning.”

She took a breath.

“Adrian met me eight years ago. I was working at a legal aid office. He was trying to trace shell companies tied to Victor Russo.”

“Without telling me.”

“He was trying to protect you.”

“Everybody keeps saying that.”

“He believed you would confront Victor immediately.”

“He was right.”

“And Victor would’ve known.”

I couldn’t argue.

Elena continued.

“Adrian discovered Victor had been building his own operation inside yours. Money laundering. Smuggling. Corrupt police. He was planning to remove your family and take control.”

I looked at Ruby.

“Was she born before the explosion?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t Adrian tell me he had a daughter?”

Elena’s eyes filled.

“Because the first threat came the day after she was born.”

“What threat?”

“A photograph of Ruby sleeping in the hospital.”

My jaw clenched.

“No message?”

“One sentence.”

“What?”

Elena looked directly at me.

“Walk away from the Morettis or bury the child.”

Silence filled the room.

Ruby stared at her teddy bear.

I said, “Victor.”

“We think so.”

“You said you knew the inside man.”

Elena nodded slowly.

“Your uncle.”

I went still.

“Salvatore?”

“Yes.”

My father’s younger brother.

A man who had attended every birthday Noah ever had.

The man who sat beside my mother at Adrian’s funeral.

“You’re certain?”

“I heard Victor talking to him last night.”

“What did he say?”

“That Salvatore had kept you blind for six years.”

I stood.

Elena flinched.

“Where is Adrian?”

“I don’t know.”

My phone buzzed.

Coordinates.

An abandoned machine shop twenty miles west.

I looked at Elena.

“He contacted me.”

Her face changed.

“He’s alive?”

“Yes.”

She covered her mouth.

Ruby looked up.

“Daddy?”

I crouched.

“He’s alive.”

Ruby jumped off the bed.

“Then let’s go get him.”

Elena grabbed her hand.

“No.”

“Mom!”

“It’s dangerous.”

Ruby looked at me.

“You said family stays together.”

I had said no such thing.

But I knew exactly where she learned it.

“Elena stays here. Ruby stays with her.”

Ruby’s face fell.

“I’ll bring him back.”

“You promise?”

“I promise.”

Outside, Marco listened while I explained.

He swore quietly.

“Salvatore.”

“Don’t call him.”

“He’s at your house.”

My blood froze.

“Noah.”

“He came in through the west gate ten minutes ago.”

I turned toward the elevator.

“Call security.”

Marco did.

Nobody answered.

He tried again.

Nothing.

I took out my phone and called Noah directly.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Then a message appeared.

A photograph.

Noah sitting in the library.

Salvatore standing behind him.

Below it:

Bring Ruby to the old Moretti warehouse. Come alone.

Marco read it.

“He has Noah.”

My vision narrowed.

Elena stepped into the hallway.

“What happened?”

I didn’t answer.

She saw the photo.

“No.”

Ruby looked confused.

“What?”

Elena pulled her close.

I called the number.

Salvatore answered.

“Dante.”

“If you touch my son—”

“Always threatening.”

“You have ten seconds to explain why you’re still breathing.”

Salvatore laughed.

“You sound like your father.”

“Where’s Noah?”

“Safe.”

“For now?”

“Bring Ruby.”

“No.”

“Then Noah pays for Adrian’s mistakes.”

Ruby heard him.

Her face went pale.

She whispered:

“I’ll go.”

Elena shook her head violently.

“No.”

Ruby looked at me.

“If I go, Noah comes home?”

I knelt.

“You’re not going anywhere.”

“But—”

“This is not your problem.”

“He’s my cousin.”

That word hit hard.

Cousin.

Family.

Exactly what Victor and Salvatore had tried to erase.

I stood.

“Marco, get every loyal man we have.”

“You’re not going alone.”

“No.”

“What’s the plan?”

I looked at Salvatore’s message again.

“He thinks he’s forcing me to choose between two children.”

Marco waited.

May you like

I locked my phone.

“He’s about to learn I don’t choose.”
