Chapter 5 - The Silent Bride’s Secret

Elena walked upstairs without explaining.
Dante followed.
She entered their bedroom, opened her old suitcase, and removed the lining from the bottom.
Inside was a brass key.
Dante stared.
“You brought that to our wedding?”
“My mother told me never to let it leave my possession.”
“What does it open?”
“I never knew.”
Until now.
Elena remembered one thing Raffaele had said.
The original ledger.
And one thing her mother repeated during Elena’s childhood.
When you finally know what the key is for, you’ll know whom not to trust.
Elena looked at Dante.
“I need to go to my mother’s old house.”
“I’m coming.”
“No.”
“That wasn’t a request.”
Elena stepped close.
“And I’m not one of your soldiers.”
Dante paused.
Then nodded.
“You’re right.”
Elena blinked.
“You agreed surprisingly fast.”
“I’m recovering.”
Despite herself, she smiled.
“But I’m still coming.”
---
Sofia Rossi’s old house had been empty for twelve years.
Behind a loose basement brick, Elena found a small steel compartment.
The brass key fit.
Inside sat another ledger.
And a cassette tape.
Dante stared at it.
“Your mother liked drama.”
“You should appreciate that.”
They found an old player upstairs.
Sofia’s voice filled the dusty room.
“Elena, if you’re hearing this, then the past finally found you.”
Elena closed her eyes.
Dante remained beside her.
Sofia explained everything.
Lucia’s donation.
Vittorio’s war.
Raffaele’s role.
The financial network.
Then came the part neither expected.
“Lucia gave you more than marrow, Elena. She gave us time. She told me something before she died. She said Dante was different from Vittorio.”
Dante looked away.
“She believed her brother could become better than the men raising him.”
Sofia’s recorded voice continued.
“If you ever meet him, judge him by what he chooses after he learns the truth.”
The tape clicked off.
Silence.
Dante looked at Elena.
“Well?”
“Well what?”
“You’re supposed to judge me.”
“I am.”
“And?”
“The jury is still out.”
A faint smile touched his mouth.
Then headlights swept across the windows.
Dante’s expression changed instantly.
“Elena. Down.”
Glass shattered downstairs.
Dante pulled her behind the wall.
Voices entered the house.
Marco’s men had followed at a distance, but someone else had arrived first.
Raffaele.
“You should have left the dead alone!” he shouted from below.
Dante looked at Elena.
“Stay here.”
“No.”
“Elena.”
“You were shot three weeks ago.”
“And?”
“You’re not particularly difficult to shoot.”
Dante almost looked offended.
“This is not the time.”
They heard footsteps.
Elena grabbed the ledger.
Dante led her toward the back stairs.
Raffaele appeared at the opposite end of the hallway.
“Give me the book.”
Dante stepped in front of Elena.
“No.”
Raffaele laughed.
“Still protecting Rossi women. Lucia would appreciate the irony.”
Dante’s expression turned cold.
“You spent thirty years hiding behind my father.”
“Your father built everything you have.”
“Then maybe some of it deserves to fall.”
Raffaele stared at him.
“You’d destroy the Moretti empire over her?”
Dante glanced back at Elena.
“No.”
Then he looked at his uncle.
“I’d destroy the parts that should never have existed.”
Sirens sounded outside.
Raffaele’s confidence vanished.
Elena looked at Dante.
“You called police?”
“Not exactly.”
Marco appeared behind Raffaele with two federal investigators.
Dante smiled.
“I called people who enjoy ledgers.”
Raffaele stared at him in disbelief.
“You would hand family records to the government?”
Dante answered calmly.
“You stopped being family when you killed Lucia.”
Raffaele was taken downstairs.
Before disappearing, he looked back.
“This woman will destroy you.”
Dante glanced at Elena.
“She donated blood.”
He adjusted his jacket.
“So technically she’s been rebuilding me.”
Elena stared at him.
“That was terrible.”
“I nearly died recently. Be supportive.”
For the first time since their wedding, Elena laughed in front of him.
Dante simply watched her.
He realized he had never heard the sound before.

And suddenly he hated himself for every day he had given her a reason to hide it.
