Chapter 5 - The Secret Elena Never Told Him

The Romano threat changed the estate.

Security increased.

Mia’s preschool route changed daily.

Elena hated every second of it.

But something else changed too.

Adrien stopped hiding his feelings.

He joined Mia for breakfast.

He learned that pancakes shaped like stars tasted exactly like ordinary pancakes.

He sat through an entire animated movie because Mia refused to let him leave.

He even allowed her to paint one fingernail purple.

Carlo discovered this during a business meeting.

He looked at Adrien’s hand.

“Boss.”

“No.”

“I didn’t say anything.”

“You were about to.”

“I absolutely was.”

Mia pointed proudly.

“I did it.”

Carlo nodded solemnly.

“It’s intimidating.”

Adrien glared.

“Get out.”

Elena laughed from the doorway.

For several weeks, life felt almost normal.

Then a man named Daniel Rossi appeared at the estate gate.

Elena saw him through the kitchen window.

The plate slipped from her hands.

It shattered.

The cook turned.

“Elena?”

She was already running.

Outside, Daniel was arguing with security.

“I’m her husband.”

“You’re not entering.”

“Elena!”

She stopped ten feet away.

Daniel smiled.

“Been a while.”

Adrien arrived moments later.

His eyes moved from Daniel to Elena.

“Who is he?”

Elena’s voice was tight.

“My husband.”

Adrien went completely still.

Daniel smirked.

“Guess she didn’t mention me.”

Elena looked at Adrien.

“He left before Mia was born.”

Daniel laughed.

“Left?”

“You emptied our account.”

“I had problems.”

“You disappeared for three years.”

“I’m back.”

Adrien stepped forward.

Elena immediately raised a hand.

“No.”

Adrien stopped.

Daniel looked amused.

“What, you trained him?”

Elena’s voice sharpened.

“You don’t get to come here and talk like that.”

“I came for my daughter.”

“She doesn’t know you.”

“She should.”

“You never called.”

“I wasn’t in a position.”

“You were in Atlantic City.”

Daniel’s smile vanished.

Elena had done her homework.

“I saw your records.”

Daniel glanced at Adrien.

“You spying on me?”

Adrien answered.

“I haven’t started yet.”

“Adrien,” Elena warned.

He fell silent.

Daniel stepped closer.

“I have rights.”

Elena’s face paled slightly.

That was what he had come for.

Not Mia.

Leverage.

“I want visitation.”

“You want money.”

Daniel smiled.

“Maybe we can discuss both.”

Adrien’s entire body tightened.

Elena stepped between them.

“You stay away from Mia.”

“Or what?”

“I go to court.”

Daniel laughed.

“With what lawyer?”

Adrien spoke.

“The best one in New York.”

Elena turned.

“I can handle this.”

“I know.”

“Then let me.”

Adrien nodded.

Daniel looked between them.

“Cute.”

Elena’s voice became colder.

“You abandoned a pregnant wife, stole our savings, and never paid a dollar in support. You want court?”

She stepped closer.

“Let’s go to court.”

Daniel’s confidence faded.

He left.

That night Adrien stood outside the kitchen.

Elena was alone.

“You didn’t tell me.”

She kept washing dishes.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because it wasn’t your business.”

“That’s fair.”

She stopped.

“You’re not angry?”

“I am.”

“At me?”

“At him.”

She dried her hands.

“I thought you would think I lied.”

“You said Mrs. Rossi. I assumed widow.”

“I never said widow.”

“No.”

“He vanished three months before Mia was born.”

Adrien said nothing.

“He took everything we had. Rent money. Hospital savings.”

“Elena’s voice remained steady.

“I gave birth owing nearly twenty thousand dollars.”

Adrien’s jaw tightened.

“Don’t fix it.”

“I didn’t say anything.”

“You were thinking loudly.”

“I can’t control that.”

She smiled faintly.

Then it disappeared.

“I’m scared.”

Adrien stepped closer but stopped before touching her.

“Of Daniel?”

“Of what comes next.”

“He won’t take Mia.”

“You can’t know that.”

“Yes, I can.”

“Because you know judges?”

“Because abandonment matters. Records matter. His gambling debts matter.”

She stared.

“You already investigated him.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Thirty-seven minutes after he left.”

“Adrien.”

“I showed restraint.”

“You investigated my husband.”

“Technically.”

“Don’t say technically.”

“He is still legally your husband.”

She looked away.

“I filed once.”

“What happened?”

“I couldn’t afford to continue after he stopped responding.”

Adrien waited.

Elena looked back.

“You’re going to offer me a lawyer.”

“Yes.”

“No conditions?”

“No.”

“No repayment?”

“No.”

“No control?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Adrien’s voice softened.

“Because loving someone does not mean buying the right to decide for them.”

Elena froze.

Adrien realized what he had said.

Neither moved.

“Did you just say loving?”

“Yes.”

Her breathing changed.

“Adrien.”

“I won’t take it back.”

“This is complicated.”

“I know.”

“You have enemies.”

“I know.”

“Your family hates this.”

“Some of them.”

“Mia could get hurt.”

“That is the only reason I would ever understand you walking away.”

She stared at him.

“And if I don’t?”

His expression softened.

“Then I spend however long it takes proving I can build something different.”

Elena stepped closer.

“Different from what?”

“My father.”

She touched his hand.

The purple fingernail was still there.

She laughed through the sudden emotion.

“You kept it.”

“Mia said removing it before Friday would be rude.”

Elena looked up.

Then kissed him.

Briefly.

Gently.

Adrien did not move until she stepped back.

“That,” she whispered, “was permission.”

Adrien smiled.

“I understood.”

From the doorway came a tiny voice.

“Mommy?”

They jumped apart.

Mia stood holding her rabbit.

She looked at Elena.

Then Adrien.

Then their hands.

“Did he finally smile?”

Elena laughed.

“Yes.”

Mia nodded.

“I told you.”

The moment lasted exactly twelve hours.

The next morning Daniel Rossi filed for emergency custody.

And attached to his petition were photographs of Mia inside Adrien Moretti’s estate.

His argument was simple.

The child was living around organized crime.

And suddenly, for the first time, Adrien’s name was no longer Elena’s protection.

May you like

It was ammunition against her.
