Chapter 5 - When the Empire Turned on Lucy

Change made enemies faster than money did.

Within two weeks, Lucy learned that lesson.

The new review system found missing fuel payments.

Fake consulting fees.

Ghost employees.

Managers approving their own vendors.

Nobody liked being questioned.

Especially by a woman they remembered carrying trays.

At a morning meeting, logistics director Raymond Costa threw a folder onto the table.

“This is absurd.”

Lucy looked at him.

“What is?”

“I’ve run ports for nineteen years.”

“Congratulations.”

“I don’t need some maid reviewing my signatures.”

The room went silent.

Lucy closed the folder.

“You’re right.”

Raymond smiled.

Then Lucy continued.

“You need someone reviewing them who can count.”

Enzo covered his mouth.

Dante did not.

Raymond turned toward him.

“You’re allowing this?”

Dante leaned back.

“I’m allowing an advisor to do the job I hired her to do.”

“She embarrasses senior men.”

“No,” Lucy said. “Their paperwork embarrasses them.”

Raymond slammed both hands onto the table.

“You think speaking five languages makes you powerful?”

Lucy met his stare.

“No.”

She tapped the folder.

“Knowing where six hundred thousand dollars disappeared makes me inconvenient.”

Raymond stopped.

Dante’s voice became quiet.

“Sit down.”

Raymond did.

But the resistance spread.

Anonymous complaints appeared.

Rumors claimed Lucy was manipulating Dante.

Some said she was sleeping with him.

Others said she planned to seize control of the business.

Then somebody leaked her father’s debt records.

Lucy entered the staff kitchen one morning and conversation died instantly.

She knew why.

Her father, Professor Edward Warren, had borrowed heavily after a failed educational publishing company collapsed.

Collectors had pursued the family after his death.

That debt had eventually brought Lucy to the Moretti estate.

By lunchtime, copies of the documents had circulated throughout the building.

Dante entered her office.

“Who did this?”

Lucy kept typing.

“I don’t know.”

“I’ll find out.”

“I assumed you would.”

He closed the door.

“You’re leaving?”

A suitcase sat beside her desk.

“Yes.”

His expression changed.

“Because of gossip?”

“Because someone inside your organization accessed my private records.”

“I’ll deal with it.”

“That sentence is exactly the problem.”

Dante stared.

Lucy stood.

“You keep thinking every problem becomes yours to solve because you have power.”

“I can protect you.”

“I didn’t ask for protection.”

“Lucy—”

“I asked for autonomy.”

His jaw tightened.

“There’s a difference between control and protection.”

“There is.”

“Then why does everything you offer eventually sound like an order?”

Dante went silent.

Lucy picked up her bag.

“I need space.”

“For how long?”

“That’s not your decision.”

He moved toward the door.

For one second, she wondered if he would block it.

Instead, he stepped aside.

Lucy stopped.

Dante looked at her.

“I don’t like this.”

“I know.”

“I could make you stay.”

Her expression hardened.

Then Dante continued.

“But I won’t.”

Something shifted between them.

Lucy left.

Three days passed.

Then four.

She stayed at a small apartment in Queens that had belonged to her father.

Nobody from Moretti security appeared outside.

No car followed her.

No messages demanded her return.

Dante sent one text.

Your contract remains valid. Your office remains yours. Come back if you choose.

Nothing else.

On the fifth day, Enzo visited.

Lucy opened the door.

“Did Dante send you?”

“No.”

“Are you lying?”

“Probably about something. Not that.”

She let him inside.

Enzo placed a folder on the table.

“We found who leaked your records.”

“Raymond?”

“No.”

“Who?”

“Dante’s uncle.”

Lucy stared.

“Anthony Moretti?”

“He thinks you’re destabilizing things.”

“He’s on the board.”

“Exactly.”

Lucy understood immediately.

Anthony represented the old Moretti structure.

Rank.

Secrecy.

Fear.

No questions.

Enzo sat.

“He’s rallying people against Dante.”

“Why tell me?”

“Because he’s using you as the excuse.”

Lucy shook her head.

“Then Dante needs to handle his family.”

“He is.”

Enzo hesitated.

“But Anthony found something else.”

“What?”

“A vote.”

Lucy frowned.

“What vote?”

“Three senior captains want Dante removed from operational control.”

Lucy stared at him.

“Because he added financial oversight?”

“Because he changed the rules.”

“Those rules were being exploited.”

“I know.”

Enzo leaned forward.

“But empires rarely revolt because change is wrong.”

His expression darkened.

“They revolt because somebody stopped making money.”

That night, Lucy received a voicemail.

Anthony Moretti.

His voice was calm.

“Miss Warren, Dante’s mistake was believing intelligence could replace obedience.”

A pause.

“You convinced him to question everyone.”

Another pause.

“Tomorrow, everyone will question him.”

Lucy listened twice.

Then she called Dante.

He answered immediately.

“Lucy?”

“I’m coming back.”

A pause.

“Why?”

“Because your uncle just made a mistake.”

“What mistake?”

Lucy grabbed her coat.

May you like

“He spoke to me in Italian.”
