Chapter 7 - The Ring Luca Didn’t Force Onto My Finger

Six months later, I walked into Luca Valenti’s office carrying a folder.

Marco nearly fell out of his chair.

“Elena?”

“Good morning.”

“You’re here.”

“I noticed.”

He stared at me.

“Does Luca know?”

“No.”

Marco smiled.

“This might be the first surprise he’s received in twenty years that wasn’t explosive.”

“Don’t ruin it.”

He opened the office door.

Luca stood by the window.

He turned.

And froze.

“Elena.”

“Hello, Luca.”

He dismissed everyone with one look.

Then he remained exactly where he was.

Careful.

Waiting.

That was new.

I placed the folder on his desk.

“What is this?”

“Articles of incorporation.”

“For?”

“The Russo Foundation.”

He opened it.

I continued.

“I accepted the restitution trust.”

His eyes lifted.

“Not for myself.”

“You donated it.”

“Yes.”

The foundation would provide legal and financial help to small business owners trapped by predatory lenders and organized crime.

Caroline had already volunteered to run community outreach.

Even Ethan had contributed twelve dollars and thirty-eight cents.

Luca smiled when I told him.

“He insisted it be specifically used for snacks.”

“A serious philanthropist.”

“Very.”

Then the humor disappeared.

Luca closed the folder.

“Why are you here?”

I took a breath.

“Because six months ago, I needed to know whether I could build a life that didn’t revolve around you.”

His expression tightened.

“And?”

“I can.”

He nodded slowly.

“I’m glad.”

“I’m not finished.”

He waited.

“I learned I don’t need you.”

Something flashed across his face.

I stepped closer.

“But I want you.”

Luca stopped breathing.

“You should probably say something.”

“I’m trying not to ruin this.”

“That would be a historic achievement.”

He laughed softly.

Then became serious.

“Elena, nothing about my life is simple.”

“I know.”

“There are still people who hate my name.”

“I know.”

“I’m leaving parts of that life.”

I blinked.

“What?”

He gestured toward the city.

“Mercer’s case exposed too much. Sofia’s cooperation exposed more.”

“Is she cooperating?”

“Her attorney discovered prison is uncomfortable.”

I smiled.

Luca continued.

“I’m selling everything I can’t operate legally.”

“You’re leaving the organization?”

“I’m dismantling what should have been dismantled years ago.”

“Because of me?”

“No.”

That answer mattered.

“Because I finally realized surviving isn’t the same as living.”

He paused.

“You helped me see that. But the choice is mine.”

I nodded.

“Good answer.”

“I prepared.”

“Obviously.”

He walked closer.

“What happens now?”

“I have conditions.”

His mouth twitched.

“Of course you do.”

“No lies.”

“Agreed.”

“No secret files about my family.”

“Agreed.”

“No deciding what I can handle.”

Luca hesitated.

“Elena—”

“Luca.”

“Fine.”

“And if you ever tell me you’re protecting me by withholding the truth, I’m leaving.”

He nodded.

“Understood.”

“One more.”

“What?”

I smiled.

“Dinner.”

He blinked.

“Dinner?”

“A normal date.”

“You want me to take you on a date?”

“Yes.”

“I own three restaurants.”

“We’re not going to any of them.”

“Why?”

“Because I want to see whether Luca Valenti can make a reservation without frightening anyone.”

“That seems unnecessarily cruel.”

I laughed.

Then he reached into his desk.

“Before dinner, there is something I should return.”

He placed a small velvet box in front of me.

I stared at it.

“Luca.”

“It isn’t what you think.”

“That is definitely a ring box.”

“Yes.”

“Then it is exactly what I think.”

He opened it.

Inside was my grandmother’s gold ring.

I had lost it months earlier at Luca’s apartment.

“I found it after you left.”

I touched the ring.

“You kept it.”

“I considered mailing it.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“I was afraid it would look like manipulation.”

“That may be the healthiest thought you’ve ever had.”

He smiled.

Then did something that made my chest tighten.

He handed me the ring.

He didn’t put it on me.

He didn’t kneel.

He simply placed it in my palm.

“Your choice.”

Six months earlier, I would not have understood how much those two words mattered.

Now I did.

I slipped the ring onto my own finger.

Luca looked disappointed.

“That isn’t exactly the finger I had in mind.”

I laughed.

“One date at a time, Valenti.”

“One?”

“Behave and there may be two.”

He stepped closer.

“Can I kiss you?”

That question meant more than any expensive gift could have.

I nodded.

“Yes.”

His kiss was gentle.

No audience.

No blood.

No threats.

No rival waiting outside.

Just Luca and me, standing in morning sunlight with nothing between us except all the truths we had finally stopped hiding.

Three months later, Adrian Mercer received a forty-year sentence.

Sofia accepted a plea deal and testified against the remaining members of his organization.

Caroline became executive director of the Russo Foundation.

Ethan became convinced Luca was secretly his personal chauffeur and called him whenever he needed a ride to baseball practice.

And Luca?

He kept his promise.

The illegal businesses disappeared one by one.

The legitimate ones remained.

So did I.

A year after the night Shaw attacked me, Luca took me back to the Hawthorne Foundation gala.

I almost refused.

Then I realized I didn’t want one terrible night to own the building forever.

When the charity auction ended, Luca found me standing near the coatroom.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“Want to leave?”

“No.”

I looked inside the small room where everything had changed.

Then I closed the door.

Luca watched me.

“That’s it?”

“That’s it.”

He reached into his jacket.

“Good.”

“Why?”

“Because I have a question.”

He dropped to one knee.

I stared at him.

People nearby gasped.

I immediately pointed at him.

“Do not make a speech.”

Luca laughed.

“I had three pages prepared.”

“I will leave.”

He opened a ring box.

“Elena Russo.”

“Yes?”

“Will you marry me?”

I looked down at the man Manhattan once believed could frighten anyone into obedience.

He had finally learned the one thing love could never survive without.

Choice.

So I smiled.

“Yes.”

The room erupted in applause.

Luca slid the ring onto my finger.

Caroline cried.

Ethan shouted, “I knew it!”

And when Luca stood, I whispered against his ear.

“One condition.”

He sighed.

“There’s always a condition.”

“No blood on my wedding dress.”

He laughed.

“Deal.”

This time, when Luca Valenti knelt in front of me, there was no blood beneath us.

No enemy at the door.

No secret waiting to destroy us.

Only a ring.

May you like

A future.

And a choice we had both made freely
