Chapter 4 - Claudia’s Last Move

Two weeks later, Nora attended the Vellini Foundation's annual hospital fundraiser.

She nearly canceled.

Then she remembered something.

The foundation was not Matteo.

She had helped build it.

She entered the ballroom alone.

Conversations softened.

Everyone knew.

Everyone had heard some version of the story.

Then Claudia approached.

“Nora.”

“Claudia.”

“You look well.”

“I am.”

Claudia smiled.

“I suppose near-death experiences provide perspective.”

Nora's eyes sharpened.

“So does discovering who people become when they think you're weak.”

Claudia's smile faded.

“You blame me.”

“No.”

That surprised her.

“I blame my husband for his choices.”

Across the ballroom, Matteo watched them.

He began walking over.

Nora noticed.

“Don't.”

Matteo stopped.

Claudia laughed softly.

“Interesting.”

Nora looked at her.

“What is?”

“You finally learned how to control him.”

“I don't want to control him.”

Claudia leaned closer.

“Every woman wants to control a powerful man.”

“No. Some of us want a partner.”

Claudia's expression hardened.

“You'll never understand Matteo.”

“Maybe.”

Nora smiled faintly.

“But I'm beginning to understand you.”

Claudia stiffened.

“You needed me to fail.”

“Excuse me?”

“Because if Matteo could build something healthier with me, then you'd have to admit your marriage failed for reasons that weren't entirely his.”

Claudia's eyes flashed.

“Careful.”

Nora almost laughed.

“That's Matteo's line.”

Several guests had begun watching.

Claudia lowered her voice.

“He'll become bored with this guilt.”

“Maybe.”

“He'll return to who he is.”

“Then I'll leave.”

That answer silenced Claudia.

Nora continued.

“I don't need his mansion.”

She touched her wedding ring.

“And I don't need this.”

She removed it.

Matteo's face changed across the room.

Nora placed the ring into her purse.

“If Matteo wants our marriage, he can earn it.”

Claudia stared.

“You would walk away from everything?”

“No.”

Nora looked toward Matteo.

“I'm walking toward myself.”

Then she left the ballroom.

---

Matteo followed her outside.

“Nora.”

Rain had begun falling.

She turned.

“You said you wouldn't pressure me.”

“I won't.”

“Then why are you following me?”

“Because Claudia arranged the message Celeste sent you.”

Nora froze.

“What?”

“Enzo found out yesterday.”

Matteo stepped closer.

“She wanted you to think something was happening between us.”

“Wasn't it?”

“No.”

“You were with her.”

“At a business dinner.”

“You let her sit beside you.”

“Yes.”

“You let her insult me.”

“Yes.”

“You laughed at me.”

His voice dropped.

“Yes.”

Nora's anger faltered because he refused every escape she offered him.

“No excuses?”

“None.”

“That's new.”

“I had a good teacher.”

She looked away.

Matteo continued.

“I removed Claudia from the foundation board today.”

Nora looked back sharply.

“Don't do that for me.”

“I didn't.”

“Then why?”

“Because she manipulated my marriage for business influence, and I allowed it.”

He paused.

“That's my responsibility.”

Nora studied him.

“Matteo…”

“I love you.”

Her eyes closed briefly.

“Don't.”

“I don't expect that to fix anything.”

“Then why say it?”

“Because for years I acted like loving you was something you were supposed to understand without me showing it.”

He looked toward the street.

“I was wrong.”

Nora remained silent.

Matteo stepped backward.

“I'll see you when you're ready.”

He walked away.

Nora watched him disappear into the rain.

For the first time, Matteo Vellini had left without demanding the final word.
