Chapter 3 - Someone Wanted Sadie Gone
Three nights later, Sadie arrived for work and found Leo waiting beside her locker.
“You've caused problems.”
Sadie kept walking.
“I defeated a fighter.”
“You humiliated Dominic.”
“He seems alive.”
Leo grabbed the locker door before she could open it.
“You don't belong around him.”
Sadie looked at his hand.
Leo immediately removed it.
He remembered what happened last time.
“You're scared,” Sadie said.
“Of you?”
“No.”
She leaned closer.
“Of what I noticed.”
Leo's face changed.
Sadie had spent eleven months being invisible.
Invisible people heard things.
Saw things.
Leo meeting men from rival crews.
Leo taking envelopes.
Leo entering Dominic's office when Dominic wasn't there.
Sadie had never cared.
Until now.
“What did you notice?” Leo asked.
“Enough.”
He stepped closer.
“Keep your mouth shut.”
Sadie smiled.
“You just confirmed there's something worth talking about.”
Leo swore.
Then Dominic's voice came from behind him.
“Something I should hear?”
Leo turned.
“Nothing.”
Dominic looked at Sadie.
“Sadie?”
She considered it.
Then shook her head.
“Not yet.”
Dominic didn't like that answer.
Neither did Leo.
That evening, Dominic called Sadie into his office.
“You're hiding something.”
“So are you.”
“I'm a criminal.”
“At least you're self-aware.”
Dominic leaned against his desk.
“What did Leo say?”
“He told me to stay away from you.”
“That's not his decision.”
“He also asked what I'd noticed.”
Dominic became still.
“What have you noticed?”
Sadie closed the door.
“Thursday nights. Around one-thirty, Leo disappears for fifteen minutes.”
“Where?”
“Loading dock.”
Dominic's expression darkened.
“Who does he meet?”
“I don't know.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Until you challenged me in front of two hundred people, your business wasn't my business.”
“And now?”
“Now he made it mine.”
Dominic immediately called Knox.
“Lock the building.”
Sadie frowned.
“What?”
Dominic moved toward the door.
“Leo isn't leaving.”
They found Leo near the rear exit.
He saw Dominic.
Then Knox.
Then Sadie.
Leo stopped.
Dominic held out his hand.
“Phone.”
“Boss—”
“Phone.”
Leo handed it over.
Dominic opened the messages.
His expression changed.
Knox stepped forward.
“What?”
Dominic showed him.
Someone had been feeding information about Russo shipments, businesses, and security routes to a rival organization.
Leo had been doing it for months.
Dominic looked at him.
“Why?”
Leo swallowed.
“They offered more.”
Dominic's voice became quiet.
“I made you.”
“You kept me underneath you.”
“I trusted you.”
“That was your mistake.”
Leo suddenly lunged toward Sadie.
Knox intercepted him and drove him against the wall.
“Don't,” Knox growled.
Dominic stared at Leo.
“You threatened her because she saw you.”
Leo said nothing.
Dominic stepped closer.
“You're finished.”
Leo laughed bitterly.
“You think this ends with me?”
Dominic stopped.
“What does that mean?”
Leo looked directly at Sadie.
“They know about her now.”
Sadie's stomach tightened.
“Who?”
Leo smiled.
“The people who want Dominic's empire.”
Dominic grabbed him.
“What did you tell them?”
“That you found a weakness.”
Dominic's face became cold.
Sadie understood before he said another word.
