Chapter 5 - The King Learns to Ask

The Moretti lawyers turned the evidence over to federal investigators through intermediaries.

Bellini’s network began collapsing within days.

Victor Kane disappeared before authorities could question him.

And Lorenzo became unbearable.

“Two guards.”

“No.”

“Clara.”

“One.”

“Two.”

“I’m going to the foundation, not invading Normandy.”

“Two.”

She folded her arms.

“One guard and Silas drives.”

Silas looked between them.

“I’m apparently a marital bargaining chip now.”

Lorenzo ignored him.

“Fine.”

Clara smiled.

“See? Growth.”

But their argument changed that evening.

Maya did not return from school.

At 4:16, Clara called her.

No answer.

At 4:17, Lorenzo had every security team moving.

At 4:23, Silas entered.

“We found her phone.”

Clara stood.

“Where?”

“School parking garage.”

Her face went white.

Lorenzo took her hand.

This time, Clara did not pull away.

Then Lorenzo’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Bellini’s voice came through.

“Bring me Daniel Vance’s drive.”

Clara whispered, “Maya?”

A pause.

Then Maya’s voice.

“Clara, don’t—”

The line went dead.

Clara looked at Lorenzo.

“We give him the drive.”

“No.”

“He has my sister.”

“And the drive is the only reason she is still useful to him.”

Clara’s eyes filled with fury.

“Don’t call my sister useful.”

Lorenzo stepped closer.

“I’m saying Bellini needs leverage. We use that.”

“How?”

“By making him believe he can still win.”

Clara looked at Silas.

“Can he?”

Silas answered carefully.

“Yes.”

Lorenzo turned sharply.

Silas continued.

“But Clara decides whether she trusts us.”

That silenced everyone.

Lorenzo looked back at Clara.

For once, he did not issue an order.

“What do you want me to do?”

Clara stared at him.

It was the first time he had asked.

“Get Maya home.”

“I will.”

“No revenge. No ego. No proving who owns New York.”

Lorenzo’s jaw tightened.

“Clara—”

“You asked.”

He exhaled.

“Fine.”

“And I’m coming.”

“No.”

“Then the conversation is over.”

Lorenzo looked ready to argue.

Instead he nodded.

“Stay beside me.”

“I can agree to that.”

---

Bellini chose an unfinished luxury tower on the Hudson.

He expected Lorenzo.

He did not expect Clara to walk beside him.

Maya sat across the vast concrete floor, guarded but unharmed.

“Clara!”

Clara took one step.

Lorenzo caught her hand.

Bellini smiled.

“Mrs. Moretti.”

Clara held up the flash drive.

“You want this?”

“Very much.”

“You release Maya first.”

Bellini laughed.

“You think marriage made you powerful?”

“No.”

Clara looked at Lorenzo.

“Learning how men like you think did.”

Bellini’s smile faded.

Clara held up her phone.

“The records were copied.”

Silence.

“They’re already with investigators,” she continued. “This drive means nothing.”

Bellini looked at Lorenzo.

“You let your wife speak for you?”

Lorenzo’s answer came without hesitation.

“She speaks for herself.”

Maya suddenly smiled.

Bellini noticed.

“What?”

Maya looked toward the elevators.

“You should probably listen.”

Sirens rose in the distance.

Bellini’s face changed.

“You brought police?”

Clara shook her head.

“No.”

Lorenzo smiled coldly.

“She brought evidence.”

Within minutes, the building was surrounded.

Bellini’s own men began backing away from him.

His empire was no longer worth protecting.

Clara crossed the floor the moment Maya was released.

The sisters collided in a tight embrace.

“You okay?”

Maya nodded.

“You?”

“I’m going to ground you for getting kidnapped.”

“That seems unfair.”

Clara laughed through her tears.

Behind them, federal agents entered.

Bellini stared at Lorenzo.

“This is how Moretti wins now?”

Lorenzo looked toward Clara.

“No.”

Then he said quietly:

May you like

“This is how she does.”
