Chapter 3 - The Secret Cassidy Buried

By noon, detectives had finished questioning everyone.

Cass gave them the simplest version possible.

She broke the breaker box accidentally.

She hid.

She remembered very little.

Nobody believed her.

Nobody could prove otherwise.

Dante waited outside.

When Cass finally emerged, he opened the passenger door of his car.

“I’m taking you home.”

“No.”

“Victor’s people know your face.”

“I can take care of myself.”

“I noticed.”

Cass stopped.

Dante gestured toward the car.

“Get in.”

She eventually did.

They drove silently through Chicago.

Dante finally asked, “Military?”

Cass stared through the window.

“No.”

“Police?”

“No.”

“Federal?”

She looked at him.

“Stop asking.”

“That means I’m close.”

“You’re not.”

“Then explain.”

Cass’s jaw tightened.

“My father.”

Dante waited.

“He trained people for private security contractors. He believed every daughter should know how to protect herself.”

“That explains the weapons.”

“Yes.”

“Not everything.”

Cass sighed.

“My brother was murdered six years ago.”

Dante’s expression changed.

“Who?”

“Daniel Miller.”

Dante went still.

Cass noticed.

“You know that name.”

Dante looked straight ahead.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“He worked for Victor Krell.”

Cass stared at him.

“No.”

“He did.”

“You’re lying.”

“I don’t lie when the truth is more useful.”

“My brother hated criminals.”

“He was undercover.”

Cass stopped breathing for a moment.

“What?”

“He was feeding information to someone inside Chicago PD.”

Dante pulled the car to the curb.

Cass turned toward him.

“My family was told Daniel died during a robbery.”

“That wasn’t true.”

“Then what happened?”

Dante hesitated.

Cass grabbed his sleeve.

“What happened?”

“Victor discovered him.”

Cass released Dante slowly.

“And you knew?”

“I found out afterward.”

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?”

“Because the detective Daniel trusted was working for Victor.”

Cass stared at him.

“Who?”

“I never found out.”

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

Cass answered.

“Hello?”

A distorted voice replied.

“Your brother made the same mistake you did.”

Cass went pale.

Dante immediately looked at her.

The voice continued.

“He chose Moretti.”

“Who is this?”

“You should have stayed behind the counter.”

The call ended.

Dante held out his hand.

“Phone.”

Cass gave it to him.

He called one of his men.

“Trace the last call.”

He listened.

Then his expression darkened.

“What?”

Dante lowered the phone.

“It came from inside the police department.”

Cass whispered, “Daniel’s corrupt detective.”

“Probably.”

“So Victor wasn’t working alone.”

“No.”

Dante looked at her.

“And whoever helped kill your brother now knows you survived last night.”

Cass leaned back.

“What do we do?”

Dante started the car.

May you like

“We find him first.”
