Chapter 5 - The Trap Inside the Whitmore Mansion

The wedding remained scheduled.

Publicly, the Whitmores announced that Eleanor and Claire had “reconciled.”

Privately, Detective Bennett turned the mansion into a controlled operation.

Every entrance was monitored.

Every employee verified.

Except one.

At 4:17 p.m., a catering van arrived.

The driver's identification passed inspection.

But Eleanor noticed something.

“Laura.”

Detective Bennett approached.

“What?”

“That man.”

A gray-haired catering supervisor crossed the courtyard.

“What about him?”

“He isn't watching the staff.”

Eleanor studied him.

“He's watching the cameras.”

Bennett immediately spoke into her radio.

“Possible visual on Shaw.”

The man disappeared inside.

Meanwhile, Claire waited upstairs in her wedding dress.

Ethan entered.

For several seconds they simply looked at each other.

“You look beautiful,” he said.

Claire gave a sad smile.

“You don't have to say that.”

“I know.”

She looked at the engagement ring on the dresser.

“Do you hate me?”

“No.”

“That somehow feels worse.”

“I don't know what I feel.”

Claire nodded.

“That’s fair.”

Ethan moved toward the door.

Then stopped.

“Was any of it real?”

Claire looked at him.

“The first coffee?”

“Yes.”

“The night we got lost driving to Vermont?”

“Yes.”

“When you said yes?”

Claire's eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“The gala?”

“No.”

Ethan nodded.

“Then give me one real thing today.”

“What?”

“The truth. All of it.”

Before Claire could answer, the lights went out.

The mansion fell into darkness.

Bennett's voice sounded through Ethan's earpiece.

“Stay where you are.”

Claire whispered:

“Victor.”

Emergency lights activated.

Then a voice came through the mansion's speaker system.

“Claire.”

She froze.

Victor Shaw.

“You disappointed me.”

Ethan grabbed her hand.

“Stay behind me.”

“No.”

Claire stepped forward.

“This started because of me.”

“And it ends with police.”

Victor's voice returned.

“Bring Eleanor to the library.”

Eleanor was already walking there.

Bennett caught her arm.

“Absolutely not.”

“He wants me.”

“He's surrounded.”

“Then let him believe he isn't.”

Minutes later, Eleanor entered the library.

Victor stood beside the fireplace.

No weapon.

No dramatic army.

Just an aging man in a catering uniform holding a phone.

“You ruined everything,” he said.

Eleanor closed the door.

“No, Victor. Charles caught you stealing.”

“He destroyed me.”

“You destroyed yourself.”

Victor smiled.

“Still arrogant.”

“No.”

Eleanor moved closer.

“Just tired of people blaming my family for consequences they created themselves.”

Claire entered behind her.

Victor's smile disappeared.

“You.”

Claire lifted her chin.

“It's over.”

“You think they'll forgive you?”

“I didn't come here for forgiveness.”

“Then what?”

Claire glanced toward a tiny camera hidden among the books.

“To make sure everyone finally hears the truth.”

Victor's expression changed.

Too late.

Detective Bennett stepped through the second doorway.

“Victor Shaw, don't move.”

Victor looked at Claire.

“You betrayed me.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

“You taught me exactly what betrayal looks like.”

Bennett arrested him.

As Victor was escorted away, Eleanor turned toward Claire.

“You could have run.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you?”

Claire looked at Ethan.

“Because running would've made the last two years another lie.”

Ethan said nothing.

Claire removed her engagement ring one final time.

She placed it in his hand.

May you like

“The wedding is canceled.”

Then she walked away.
