Chapter 2 - The Proposal That Sounded Like a Threat

Clara entered Lorenzo Moretti’s Manhattan penthouse the following evening with two conditions.

First, Maya stayed somewhere safe.

Second, Clara could leave whenever she wanted.

Lorenzo agreed to both.

That almost worried her more.

He stood beside the windows overlooking Manhattan.

“You came.”

“You bought my father’s debt.”

“I did.”

“Give it back.”

“No.”

Clara dropped her purse onto a chair.

“Then this meeting is over.”

“Sit down.”

“No.”

Lorenzo turned.

“You always do the opposite of what people ask?”

“When men start sentences with commands? Usually.”

Matteo covered a smile.

Lorenzo noticed.

“Leave us.”

Matteo headed for the door.

Clara pointed after him.

“He stays.”

Lorenzo raised an eyebrow.

“Why?”

“Because if you murder me, I want a witness.”

Matteo stopped.

“I like her.”

Lorenzo sighed.

“Sit down, Matteo.”

Clara remained standing.

Lorenzo placed a folder on the table.

Inside were photographs.

Men.

Cars.

Buildings.

One picture showed Clara leaving the pharmacy.

Another showed Maya outside school.

Clara’s blood went cold.

“Who took these?”

“Not my people.”

She looked up sharply.

“Then whose?”

“My uncle, Vittorio.”

Lorenzo sat opposite her.

“For months, someone has been undermining my businesses. Contracts disappear. Information leaks. Allies switch sides.”

“What does that have to do with me?”

“You embarrassed me publicly.”

“I ignored a wet table.”

“In my world, perception becomes truth.”

Clara stared at the photographs.

“So people think you like me.”

“They know I do.”

Her eyes snapped toward him.

Lorenzo didn’t smile.

“That makes you leverage.”

“Then tell everyone you hate me.”

“Too late.”

Clara shoved the photographs away.

“This is insane.”

“Yes.”

“At least we agree.”

Lorenzo slid another document toward her.

“A marriage agreement.”

She laughed once.

“You’re serious.”

“Completely.”

“You met me yesterday.”

“And yesterday you refused me in front of eighty people.”

“Romantic.”

“I’m not offering romance.”

“What are you offering?”

“Protection. Your family’s debts disappear permanently. Maya’s medical expenses are covered. You finish college if you want.”

Clara’s face hardened.

“And what do you get?”

“A wife no faction chose for me.”

“That’s it?”

“No.”

Lorenzo leaned forward.

“I get someone who tells me the truth.”

Clara studied him.

“That sounds lonely.”

Something flickered behind his eyes.

Then vanished.

She pushed the agreement back.

“No.”

Matteo closed his eyes.

Lorenzo stared at her.

“No?”

“I won’t marry somebody because dangerous men are playing chess.”

“Clara—”

“You said I could leave.”

Lorenzo’s jaw tightened.

Then he nodded.

“You can.”

She picked up her purse.

At the door, she stopped.

“What happens to the debt?”

“Gone.”

“Even though I refused?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“Because I didn’t buy it to own you.”

“Then why?”

“So nobody else could.”

Clara left.

---

The attack came forty minutes later.

Clara’s taxi was three blocks from her apartment when a black SUV suddenly cut across the intersection.

The driver slammed the brakes.

“Lady, stay down!”

Two men climbed from the SUV.

Clara’s phone rang.

Lorenzo.

She answered.

“Clara, where are you?”

“How do you—”

“Get down.”

The rear window shattered from an impact.

Clara dropped beneath the seat.

Everything happened quickly.

A second vehicle arrived.

Men shouted outside.

No visible weapons. No dramatic firefight.

Just doors slamming, tires screaming, bodies moving through darkness.

Then silence.

Clara’s door opened.

Lorenzo stood there.

No jacket.

Black shirt.

Anger burning beneath terrifying calm.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Look at me.”

“I said I’m fine.”

“Clara.”

She looked at him.

His hand came toward her face, then stopped before touching her.

“You’re shaking.”

“So are you.”

He looked down.

She was right.

Barely.

But his hand was trembling.

Clara stepped out.

“Your uncle?”

“Probably.”

“You said you could protect us.”

“I can.”

“You nearly got me killed.”

His expression tightened.

“Yes.”

That answer stopped her.

No excuses.

No denial.

Just truth.

Lorenzo opened the rear door of his car.

“Come with me.”

Clara looked toward her apartment building.

“Maya?”

“Already moved.”

Her heart stopped.

“What?”

“Matteo picked her up ten minutes ago.”

“You moved my sister without asking?”

“I wasn’t gambling with her life.”

Clara stepped closer.

“If you ever make a decision about Maya without telling me again, I don’t care how many people fear you. You’ll answer to me.”

Lorenzo looked down at her.

Then nodded.

“Understood.”

Clara got into the car.

“Where are we going?”

“My estate.”

“And then?”

Lorenzo sat beside her.

“Then we find out who just tried to take you.”

Clara stared through the tinted window.

Twenty-four hours earlier, her biggest problem had been an insulin bill.

Now New York’s most dangerous man was sitting beside her.

And somewhere in the city, someone had already decided she needed to disappear.
