Chapter 2 - The Name They Never Asked About

Brendan rushed toward the window.

Lights moved beyond the trees.

“What did you do?”

Cassidy calmly removed her soaked jacket.

“I made a phone call.”

“You called the military?”

“I called my father.”

Diane scoffed.

“Your father?”

“Yes.”

“The man you told us worked for the government?”

Cassidy met her eyes.

“I said he served the country.”

Jessica stood.

“Doing what?”

Cassidy didn’t answer.

Brendan turned from the window.

“Cassidy, stop playing games.”

“I’m not.”

A second helicopter passed overhead.

The house vibrated.

Diane’s wineglass rattled against the table.

Then headlights appeared outside.

Several dark government vehicles approached the estate.

Brendan’s face went pale.

“Who is your father?”

Cassidy’s expression remained calm.

“You never asked.”

“I asked plenty of times!”

“You demanded to know how much money he made. You asked whether he could help your business. You asked whether my family had connections.”

“That’s asking.”

“No. That’s calculating.”

The doorbell rang.

Nobody moved.

It rang again.

Brendan finally walked into the foyer.

Two uniformed military security officers stood outside alongside a civilian federal liaison.

“Cassidy Carter?”

Cassidy stepped forward.

“Yes.”

“Ma’am, we’ve been directed to ensure your immediate safety.”

Brendan stared at them.

“This is my house.”

The senior officer looked at him.

“We’re aware, sir.”

“You can’t just storm onto private property.”

“We didn’t.”

The officer glanced toward the security camera.

“We rang the bell.”

Jessica suddenly whispered, “Brendan.”

Everyone turned.

She was staring through the front window.

Another vehicle had arrived.

An older man stepped out.

No uniform.

Dark overcoat.

Silver hair.

Perfect posture.

Cassidy closed her eyes briefly.

“Dad.”

Brendan looked at her.

“That’s your father?”

General William Carter entered the house without drama.

He didn’t need any.

Decades of command showed in the way he walked.

He looked first at Cassidy.

At her wet hair.

Her soaked clothes.

The dirty water around her shoes.

Then at her stomach.

“Are you hurt?”

“I don’t think so.”

“You don’t think so?”

“The baby’s moving.”

“Medical team is outside.”

Diane stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous.”

General Carter looked at her.

“Who are you?”

Diane blinked.

“Diane Hale. This is my home.”

William nodded toward the overturned bucket.

“What happened?”

“It was a harmless joke.”

“Cassidy?”

“She dumped the water over me.”

William’s jaw tightened.

“And the others?”

“Brendan and Jessica watched.”

“I did not participate,” Jessica quickly said.

Cassidy looked at her.

“You laughed.”

Jessica went silent.

Brendan stepped closer.

“General Carter, I think everyone needs to calm down.”

William looked at him.

“You know who I am?”

Brendan swallowed.

“I recognize you now.”

“That’s unfortunate.”

“Why?”

“Because apparently you respected my photograph more than you respected my daughter.”

Brendan’s face reddened.

“You don’t understand our marriage.”

“You’re right.”

William stepped closer.

“I understand tonight.”

Diane crossed her arms.

“Nobody committed a crime.”

“That determination isn’t mine.”

She hesitated.

“What does that mean?”

“It means Cassidy activated a legitimate family emergency procedure connected to threats arising from protected service circumstances. Security responded. What happens next depends on facts.”

Brendan stared at Cassidy.

“You actually served?”

Cassidy nodded.

“As an officer.”

“You told me you were a government analyst.”

“That was the description I was authorized to give.”

Brendan looked stunned.

“What rank?”

“Captain when I left active duty.”

Jessica slowly sat down.

Diane stared at Cassidy as if seeing her for the first time.

Brendan whispered, “And your father really is General William Carter?”

William answered for her.

“Yes.”

Nobody laughed.

A medic approached Cassidy.

“Ma’am, we’d like to examine you.”

Cassidy nodded.

William touched his daughter’s shoulder.

“Go.”

Brendan stepped forward.

“I’m coming.”

Cassidy turned.

“No.”

“I’m the baby’s father.”

“You’re also the man who laughed while someone dumped filthy ice water on me.”

His face collapsed.

“Cassidy—”

“No.”

She walked toward the door.

For the first time in their entire relationship, Brendan finally understood something.

Cassidy had never stayed quiet because she was powerless.

She had stayed quiet because she had discipline.

May you like

And those were very different things.
