Chapter 2 - Ten Black SUVs

At exactly 8:00 the next morning, Claire returned carrying a cardboard box.
She was there for her final wages, spare shoes, and whatever remained of her dignity.
Vanessa was already sitting beside the window with two friends.
She smiled when Claire entered.
“Back already?”
Claire ignored her.
Martin appeared behind the counter.
“Wait there.”
“For my wages?”
“We need to discuss yesterday.”
“There’s nothing to discuss.”
Martin lowered his voice.
“Vanessa has agreed not to post the video if you issue a written apology.”
Claire laughed once.
“You fired me.”
“I can reconsider.”
“No.”
Vanessa called across the café.
“You should really learn when someone is trying to help you.”
Claire turned.
“You hid a blind woman’s cane for entertainment.”
“And you threw away your job over a stranger.”
Claire was about to answer when an engine rumbled outside.
A black SUV stopped at the curb.
Then another.
A third.
Customers started looking toward the windows.
Martin stepped closer.
“What is this?”
The fourth SUV arrived.
Then the fifth.
By the time the tenth vehicle stopped, the street was almost completely blocked.
Doors opened.
Men in dark suits stepped onto the pavement.
They moved with quiet coordination.
No shouting.
No weapons.
No dramatic gestures.
That somehow made them more intimidating.
Vanessa slowly lowered her phone.
Martin whispered, “Oh my God.”
The front door opened.
Roman De Luca entered.
Thirty-five.
Broad-shouldered.
A fitted black suit beneath a dark overcoat.
Dark ink was visible across his hands and disappeared beneath his cuffs, the kind of tattoos no expensive tailoring could completely hide.
His expression was calm.
Behind him walked Elena.
Her cane tapped once against the tile.
Roman did not take her arm.
He stayed half a step behind her.
Close enough if she asked.
Far enough to let her move independently.
Claire noticed.
Roman stopped in the middle of the café.
“Who humiliated my sister?”
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa stood.
“This has been completely misunderstood.”
Roman looked at her.
Vanessa began talking rapidly.
“Your sister came in yesterday, and your waitress created this huge scene. I was trying to help, but Claire became aggressive.”
Roman looked toward Claire.
Claire held his gaze.
Then Roman turned to Elena.
“What happened?”
Vanessa blinked.
Roman repeated calmly.
“Elena?”
His sister answered for herself.
“They hid my cane.”
Roman’s jaw tightened.
“They replaced my tea with alcohol.”
His eyes moved toward Vanessa.
“They filmed me searching for my cane.”
Martin swallowed.
“And when Claire intervened, Martin ordered her to apologize.”
Roman remained silent.
Elena continued.
“I have the recording.”
“I heard it last night.”
Martin stepped forward.
“Mr. De Luca, I can explain.”
Roman finally looked at him.
“I’m listening.”
“I was trying to protect the reputation of the café.”
Elena turned toward his voice.
“You protected the person humiliating me because she was useful to you.”
Martin opened his mouth.
“Ms. De Luca, I sincerely apologize.”
“No.”
He stopped.
“I don’t want an apology because ten SUVs are outside.”
Roman glanced at Elena.
“What do you want done?”
Vanessa looked confused.
She had clearly expected Roman to make the decision.
So had Martin.
Elena tapped her cane lightly against the floor.
“I want the original recording preserved.”
Roman nodded.
“I want Claire’s suspension reversed.”
Martin immediately said, “Of course.”
Elena’s voice hardened.
“Not because you’re afraid of Roman.”
Martin said nothing.
“And every employee here will receive proper disability-awareness training.”
Roman nodded again.
“Done.”
Vanessa exhaled in relief.
Then Elena continued.
“I’ll also make a public statement.”
Vanessa froze.
Elena turned toward her voice.
“This time, the person you tried to turn into content gets to tell the story.”
“You can’t ruin my career over one mistake.”
Elena’s expression remained calm.
“You weren’t worried about Claire’s career.”
Vanessa’s face flushed.
Roman said nothing.
He did not need to.
Then his attention shifted toward Claire.
“Claire Dawson?”
“Yes.”
“Thank you for stepping in.”
Claire glanced through the windows.
“You brought ten SUVs to say thank you?”
Roman looked outside.
“My security chief considered eight insufficient.”
Elena smiled.
Claire almost did.
Roman placed a cream envelope on the counter.
Claire opened it.
Her expression changed.
“This is too much.”
“It includes your lost wages.”
“And about twenty times more.”
“Consider it appreciation.”
Claire immediately pushed the envelope back.
Martin looked stunned.
Vanessa looked personally offended.
Roman studied Claire.
“You’re refusing it?”
“I’ll accept only the wages Martin owes me.”
“Why?”
“Because defending Elena wasn’t a service I planned to sell.”
Silence settled between them.
Roman glanced at the envelope.
Then back at Claire.
Most people he met wanted something.
Claire had just rejected enough money to solve most of her problems.
“Interesting,” he said.
Claire picked up her cardboard box.
“No. Just expensive.”
And walked toward the employee room.

For the first time that morning, Roman De Luca smiled.
