Chapter 3 - The Video

By noon, Vanessa Hart posted her version of the story.
The title read:
WAITRESS ATTACKS ME FOR TRYING TO HELP DISABLED CUSTOMER.
The video showed Claire standing in front of Vanessa.
It showed Claire pointing.
It showed Vanessa looking shocked.
It did not show the hidden cane.
It did not show the switched drink.
And it cut off moments before Elena played the recording.
Martin called Claire twenty minutes after the video went live.
“You need to come back.”
Claire was sitting inside her tiny apartment staring at unpaid bills.
“No.”
“People are leaving terrible reviews.”
“Sounds like a management problem.”
“Claire, you were an employee when this happened.”
“You fired me.”
“I reversed the termination.”
“Without asking me.”
“You need to release a statement saying you overreacted.”
Claire nearly dropped the phone.
“You cannot be serious.”
“If we calm Vanessa down, this goes away.”
Claire stood.
“She humiliated Elena yesterday, lied about me today, and you still want to protect her?”
“I want to protect the business.”
“That’s been your excuse for everything.”
She hung up.
Thirty seconds later, another number called.
“Claire Dawson?”
“Yes?”
“This is Elena.”
Claire sat again.
“How did you get my number?”
“Roman.”
A male voice in the background said, “You asked me to get it.”
Elena smiled audibly.
“He’s very literal.”
Claire laughed despite herself.
“I saw Vanessa’s video.”
“So did I.”
“Are you okay?”
Claire paused.
That was not the question she expected.
“I’ll survive.”
“Good. Because I’m releasing mine in ten minutes.”
Claire straightened.
“You don’t have to do that for me.”
“I’m not doing it for you.”
Elena’s tone remained gentle.
“I’m doing it for myself.”
Claire smiled.
“Fair enough.”
At 12:17 p.m., Elena De Luca uploaded an unedited audio recording and a short video statement.
She did not appear angry.
That made it more powerful.
“My name is Elena De Luca. Yesterday, a woman hid my cane, replaced my drink, and filmed my confusion because she believed my disability made me easy entertainment.”
She paused.
“Claire Dawson was the only person who intervened.”
Then came the recording.
Vanessa’s voice.
The instructions.
The laughter.
Within hours, Vanessa’s edited video collapsed under thousands of comments demanding the full footage.
Sponsors began distancing themselves.
One brand removed her campaign.
Then another.
Vanessa arrived at the De Luca corporate office that evening without an appointment.
Roman was in a conference room when his assistant entered.
“Vanessa Hart is downstairs.”
Roman did not look up.
“No.”
“She says she wants to apologize.”
Elena sat across from him.
“To whom?”
The assistant hesitated.
“She asked for Roman.”
Elena smiled.
“Then she isn’t here to apologize.”
Roman leaned back.
“Send her away.”
Elena tilted her head.
“No.”
Roman looked at her.
“No?”
“Let her come up.”
Ten minutes later, Vanessa entered.
No entourage.
No phones.
She looked exhausted.
“Mr. De Luca—”
“Elena is sitting right there.”
Vanessa stopped.
Elena said, “Hello, Vanessa.”
“I came to apologize.”
“To Roman?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“To you.”
Elena waited.
Vanessa took a breath.
“What I did was immature.”
“No.”
Vanessa looked confused.
“It was cruel.”
The room became quiet.
Vanessa’s eyes lowered.
“Yes.”
Elena continued.
“And why was it easy?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Because I thought…”
“Say it.”
“I thought you wouldn’t be able to stop me.”
Elena nodded.
“That’s the first honest thing you’ve said.”
Vanessa looked toward Roman.
“My sponsors are leaving.”
Roman stared at her.
“That sounds unrelated to me.”
“You can fix it.”
“I could.”
Hope appeared on her face.
Roman finished.
“I won’t.”
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“So you’re destroying everything I built?”
Elena answered instead.
“No. Your own recording is doing that.”
Vanessa turned toward the door.
Before she left, Elena spoke again.
“Vanessa.”
She stopped.
“If you’re genuinely sorry someday, apologize when there’s nothing left to gain.”
Vanessa left without answering.
Roman looked toward his sister.
“That was kinder than I would have been.”
“I know.”
He checked his phone.
“Claire rejected the money.”
“I know.”
Roman’s eyes narrowed.
“You sound pleased.”
“I am.”
“Why?”
Elena smiled.
May you like
“Because you’ve finally met someone who isn’t impressed by you.”
