Chapter 6 - The Marriage That Was Supposed to End

Martin Caldwell was arrested three weeks later.

The evidence against him was overwhelming.

Callahan House survived.

Gabriel retained control of Moretti Capital after his grandfather publicly endorsed the marriage.

Everything had worked.

Which created a new problem.

They no longer needed each other.

Eleven months after their wedding, Nora found the divorce papers on Gabriel's desk.

Signed.

His signature looked cold and precise.

Exactly like the man she had believed she married.

Gabriel entered behind her.

Nora held them up.

“You signed these?”

“Our agreement ends next month.”

“So that's it?”

Gabriel went still.

“You wanted your freedom.”

“I wanted a contract.”

Her voice shook.

“I didn't expect you.”

Silence filled the room.

Gabriel looked away.

Nora had never seen him afraid before.

Not of police.

Not of Martin.

Not of men who whispered his name.

But now?

Gabriel Moretti looked terrified.

“I don't know how to give you a normal life,” he said.

Nora stepped closer.

“I work in a jazz club until three in the morning and married a suspected mob boss after knowing him for five hours.”

She tore the divorce papers in half.

“Normal clearly isn't my priority.”

Gabriel stared at the pieces.

“You just destroyed a document my attorney billed six thousand dollars to prepare.”

“Send him my apologies.”

“Nora.”

“What?”

His hand moved to her cheek.

He hesitated.

For once, Gabriel Moretti was asking permission without words.

Nora closed the distance herself.
