Chapter 3 - The Betrayal Inside the Family

By sunrise, Luca Ferrante had disappeared.

His apartment was empty.

His phone was abandoned near Queens.

His accounts had been drained three days earlier.

Marco threw a folder onto Dante’s desk.

“He planned this.”

Dante stood beside the penthouse windows.

“Elena’s security detail?”

“Changed six weeks ago.”

“By whom?”

Marco hesitated.

“Luca.”

Dante turned.

Marco continued.

“He reassigned two men and replaced them with people he recommended.”

“Find them.”

“Already gone.”

Dante’s expression darkened.

A knock came.

Detective Callahan entered.

“I thought you might want to see this.”

He placed photographs on the desk.

Traffic-camera images.

The black SUV.

Then another photograph.

A toll camera had captured the driver.

Luca.

Dante stared at it.

Callahan said, “Your wife was right.”

Dante looked away.

Those words carried no satisfaction.

Only shame.

“Why?” Marco asked.

“We’re working on that.”

“I know why,” Dante said.

Both men looked at him.

Dante opened a locked drawer and removed a thin ledger.

“Three months ago, I discovered money missing from several legitimate holdings.”

“How much?” Callahan asked.

“Twenty-eight million.”

Marco stared.

“You never told me.”

“I told Luca to investigate.”

Callahan understood first.

“You asked the thief to investigate himself.”

Dante nodded.

“Elena must have discovered something.”

Marco frowned.

“How?”

Then Dante remembered.

Two weeks earlier.

Elena had entered his office carrying invitations.

“Dante, why does Ferrante Holdings appear on the foundation’s donor list?”

He had barely looked up.

“Luca handles some charitable transfers.”

“But the address matches one of our shell leases.”

“Elena.”

“I’m only asking.”

“And I’m working.”

He had dismissed her again.

Dante closed his eyes.

“Elena found the financial connection.”

Callahan said, “Then Luca needed her gone before she brought it to you.”

Marco shook his head.

“But why lure her from the gala?”

“Because everyone would assume the weather caused the crash,” Dante said.

His phone rang.

Hospital.

He answered.

“Yes?”

A pause.

His face changed.

“I’m coming.”

---

Elena was sitting upright when Dante returned.

“I want to go home.”

“The doctor says tomorrow.”

“I don’t want to stay here.”

“Then you won’t.”

She studied him.

“You’re agreeing with me?”

“I’m learning.”

Despite herself, Elena almost smiled.

Almost.

Dante sat down.

“We found Luca on traffic cameras.”

“I told you.”

“I know.”

“And?”

“You were right about everything.”

Elena looked at him.

Dante continued.

“The message. The SUV. Luca.”

“What did he want?”

Dante explained the missing money.

Her expression sharpened.

“The foundation.”

“Yes.”

“I asked you about that.”

“I remember.”

“You told me to stop looking for problems.”

“I remember that too.”

Elena shook her head.

“You didn’t need Luca to silence me, Dante. You were already doing it for him.”

The words landed cleanly.

Dante accepted them.

“I know.”

Her anger weakened slightly because he wasn’t fighting back.

“What happens now?”

“I find him.”

“And then?”

Dante’s old instincts appeared in his eyes.

Elena saw them immediately.

“No.”

“Elena—”

“No private revenge.”

“He tried to kill you.”

“And if you turn this into a war, he still controls our lives.”

Dante stared at her.

“He goes to the police,” Elena said. “With evidence.”

“You expect me to trust the system?”

“I expect you to trust me.”

Silence.

Then Dante nodded.

“All right.”

Elena blinked.

“All right?”

“I’ll give Callahan everything.”

“For real?”

“For real.”

She studied him suspiciously.

Then her phone rang.

Unknown number.

Dante reached for it.

Elena stopped him.

“Wait.”

The phone rang again.

She answered.

“Hello?”

A familiar voice whispered:

“You really should have died on that bridge.”

Luca.

Dante immediately activated the recorder on his own phone.

Elena kept her voice steady.

“Where are you?”

Luca laughed.

“Ask your husband.”

“Why?”

“Because everything Dante Moretti owns has a door only his friends know how to open.”

The call ended.

Dante and Elena stared at each other.

Then Marco rushed into the room.

“Dante.”

May you like

“What?”

“The estate alarm just went offline.”
