Chapter 6 - The Price of Being King

The evidence on Luca’s drive was real.

Bank transfers.

Recorded conversations.

Fake contracts.

Payments to corrupt security employees.

And one recording that changed everything.

Luca’s voice:

“Elena is becoming a problem.”

Vescari answered:

“Then remove the problem.”

Dante listened once.

Then handed everything to Callahan.

“All of it?”

“All.”

Marco stared at him.

“There are files here that could expose our businesses too.”

“I know.”

“You could lose millions.”

“I know.”

“Dante.”

Dante looked at his brother.

“My wife nearly died because everyone around me believed I would protect power before people.”

He pushed the drive toward Callahan.

“They were right.”

Then he looked toward Elena.

“Not anymore.”

The investigation spread quickly.

Vescari was arrested.

Luca accepted a deal that guaranteed he would spend decades behind bars.

Several corrupt employees followed.

Dante closed businesses that had kept his family tied to dangerous alliances.

Some associates called him foolish.

Others called him weak.

He didn’t care.

Three weeks later, Elena stood on the terrace of their Manhattan home.

Her arm remained in a sling.

Dante joined her.

“You’re staring.”

“I’m thinking.”

“That usually worries people.”

“It should.”

She smiled.

It was the first easy smile he had seen from her since the crash.

Dante handed her an envelope.

“What is this?”

“Open it.”

Inside were legal documents.

Elena read them.

Her smile disappeared.

“You transferred the foundation?”

“To you.”

“All of it?”

“You built most of it.”

“But it carries your family name.”

“Names matter less than people.”

She studied him.

“You really have changed.”

“No.”

Dante shook his head.

“I’m changing.”

That distinction mattered.

Elena placed the documents down.

“I’ve been thinking too.”

His expression tightened.

“About leaving?”

“Yes.”

Dante nodded slowly.

“If that’s what you want, I won’t stop you.”

“You would have before.”

“Yes.”

“Why not now?”

“Because loving you doesn’t make you mine to control.”

Elena stared at him.

The old Dante would never have said those words.

She stepped closer.

“I was going to leave.”

He said nothing.

“But I don’t want to anymore.”

Dante’s eyes lifted.

“That isn’t forgiveness,” she warned.

“I know.”

“It doesn’t erase the bridge.”

“I know.”

“And if I tell you something feels wrong—”

“I listen.”

“If I’m afraid—”

“I listen.”

“If I interrupt a negotiation?”

“I leave the negotiation.”

She smiled.

“Even a hundred-million-dollar negotiation?”

“Especially that one.”

Elena laughed.

Dante had almost forgotten the sound.

Then his phone rang.

Marco.

Dante answered.

“What?”

“Turn on the news.”

They went inside.

Vescari was being led into federal court.

Luca followed separately.

The reporter described charges expected to dismantle their network permanently.

Elena looked at Dante.

“It’s over.”

Dante shook his head.

“No.”

She frowned.

He took her hand.

“Now we start fixing what came before it.”
