Chapter 6 - What Family Actually Means

The permanent placement hearing, when it finally came, felt almost anticlimactic after everything before it — a formality confirming what everyone in that courtroom, including the twins themselves, already understood as true.

Judge Alvarez signed the order granting Ethan Steel full legal guardianship of Lily and Owen, with an accompanying note in the file recommending the case be reviewed for formal adoption eligibility once the standard waiting period elapsed.

Outside the courthouse, Marco was waiting with a small cake he'd clearly bought in a hurry, "CONGRATS" spelled out slightly crooked in blue icing, because he'd apparently grabbed the first one the bakery had in stock.

"Couldn't find one that said 'Congrats on becoming a dad against all military logistics and personal planning,'" Marco said, deadpan. "This was the closest."

Owen laughed — a full, unguarded laugh Ethan hadn't heard from him even once in those first difficult weeks. Lily, now visibly more at ease in her own skin than the terrified girl at Gate 17, tugged on Ethan's sleeve.

"Does this mean you're our dad now?" she asked. "For real? Not just for now?"

Ethan crouched down, the way he had that very first day, eye level, no towering, no distance.

"It means I'm not going anywhere," he said. "That's what 'for real' means, Lily. Somebody who stays."

That evening, at home, Ethan found Owen at the kitchen table with a crayon and a piece of paper, tongue poking out in concentration. He'd drawn three stick figures — a tall one in what was unmistakably meant to be a military uniform, and two smaller ones on either side, all three holding hands. Above them, in wobbly five-year-old handwriting: MY FAMLY.

Ethan didn't say anything for a long moment. He just sat down across from his son and asked if he could keep the drawing.

Six months after Gate 17, the adoption was finalized in a quiet courtroom with far fewer people than the earlier hearings — just Ethan, the twins, Marco as a witness, and Renata Cole, who cried more than anyone expected a caseworker to, admitting afterward that this was the ending she chased every case hoping to find and rarely did.

The twins' last name changed on the paperwork that day. Owen Steel. Lily Steel.

Neither of them stopped smiling for the rest of the afternoon.
