Chapter 2 - The Waitress Who Used Her Hands Instead of Her Voice

The evening continued.

But something had changed.

Adrian Moretti was no longer watching the business negotiations.

He was watching his sister.

For years, he believed he understood Sofia.

He knew her schedule.

Her preferences.

Her habits.

He knew what frustrated her.

What made her happy.

Or at least he thought he did.

But now he was seeing something different.

Sofia was not fragile.

She was frustrated.

During the keynote speech, the hotel lights dimmed.

A representative from the Moretti Foundation walked onto the stage.

“Tonight, we are proud to announce the next step in our community development plan.”

A large screen displayed an image of an old theater.

The Moretti Community Theater.

A historic building that had belonged to the foundation for decades.

Sofia immediately stopped smiling.

Her hands moved quickly.

Adrian looked at her.

But he could not understand.

“What is wrong?”

Before Sofia could answer, Marcus Vale stepped forward.

Marcus was Adrian's cousin.

A trusted member of the foundation board.

He smiled politely.

“Sofia is surprised by the announcement.”

Sofia looked at him sharply.

She signed:

I never approved this.

Marcus ignored her.

“The sale will allow the foundation to expand into new projects.”

Applause filled the room.

Sofia looked around.

Nobody was watching her.

Nobody was asking her.

Lily stood several feet away holding a tray.

She saw Sofia's expression.

She saw her hands.

And she understood.

Lily approached carefully.

She signed:

Do you want me to tell him?

Sofia looked at Adrian.

Then signed:

No. Make him ask me.

Lily understood.

She turned toward Adrian.

“Sir.”

The entire table looked at her.

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

Nobody interrupted him.

Not executives.

Not politicians.

Not family members.

But this waitress had just done it.

“Your sister is trying to answer you.”

Silence.

Adrian looked at Sofia.

Then slowly moved the documents toward her.

He did not speak.

He waited.

For the first time that night, Adrian Moretti waited.

Sofia picked up the pen.

She crossed out the approval line.

Then wrote:

I NEVER AGREED.

Adrian's expression changed instantly.

Marcus stepped forward.

“There must be a misunderstanding.”

Sofia began signing rapidly.

Adrian looked at Lily.

“Translate.”

Lily hesitated.

Then looked at Sofia.

Sofia nodded.

“She says the foundation meeting was moved twice.”

Adrian listened.

“She says the interpreter canceled shortly before dinner.”

Marcus interrupted.

“That is ridiculous.”

Lily continued.

“She says pages were missing from the documents she received.”

The room became silent.

Marcus looked at Lily.

“You are a waitress. You do not understand legal documents.”

Adrian turned toward him.

The temperature in the room seemed to drop.

“She understands my sister.”

Marcus stopped.

Adrian picked up the folder.

“Security.”

Two guards immediately approached.

“Preserve every email, every recording, every communication regarding this vote.”

Marcus forced a smile.

“Adrian, you're overreacting.”

Adrian looked at him.

“No.”

He looked at Sofia.

“I am reacting.”

For the first time all evening, Sofia looked at her brother differently.

Not because he protected her.

May you like

Because he finally listened.
