Chapter 4 - Ten Minutes

The door opened without a knock.

Derek turned, already annoyed at the interruption, expecting another nurse, another hospital employee he could brush past without a second thought. Instead, two uniformed security officers stepped into the room first, positioning themselves calmly but deliberately near the entrance. Behind them came a man in a charcoal gray suit, silver-haired, moving with the unhurried authority of someone who had never once had to raise his voice to be obeyed.

Derek didn't recognize him immediately. Then his mind caught up with his eyes, and the color drained from his face.

He had seen this man before — at a healthcare industry gala eighteen months ago, giving the keynote address to a ballroom of three hundred executives. He had seen his photograph on the cover of a regional business magazine, the headline something about "The Quiet Empire Builder." He had, in fact, once told a colleague over drinks how much he admired Richard Harper's business instincts, joking that he'd sell a kidney for a meeting with the man.

He had gotten his meeting. It was not going the way he'd imagined.

"Mr. Harper," Derek managed, his voice cracking slightly on the name. "I— this is unexpected. What brings you to—"

"My great-grandchildren," Richard said simply, his gaze moving past Derek entirely, landing instead on Claire. Something in his expression softened instantly, the cold authority replaced, just for a moment, by naked relief. "Claire."

"Grandfather." Claire's voice broke on the word, months of exhaustion and fear finally catching up to her now that help had actually arrived. "I'm sorry to call you like this, I didn't want to bother you at the office, but—"

"You will never apologize to me for calling when you need me," Richard said firmly, crossing the room to take her hand, his eyes flicking briefly, protectively, toward the two incubators. "Never. Do you understand?"

Claire nodded, blinking back tears she'd been holding since the papers hit her lap.

Derek's mistress had gone pale, her hand tightening around Derek's arm. "Derek," she whispered, "you told me she had no family. You said—"

"I said what I understood to be true," Derek snapped, though his voice had lost its earlier bravado. He turned back to Richard, attempting, badly, to recover his footing. "Mr. Harper, sir, I think there's been some confusion. Claire and I are simply finalizing some — some personal matters. This is a private family situation, and I don't see how it concerns—"

"It concerns me," Richard said, his tone perfectly level, "because you are standing in a hospital that bears my family's name, threatening my great-grandchildren's financial security less than forty-eight hours after their premature birth, while my granddaughter recovers from major surgery. It concerns me a great deal, Mr. Whitfield."

Derek's mouth opened, then closed. "You know my name."

"I know considerably more than your name," Richard said. "I've known who you were since the day my granddaughter told me she was seeing someone. I make it a point to know who spends time with the people I love. It's a habit that has served this family well for three generations."

He turned, finally, to the folder still clutched in Derek's hand — the divorce papers, Claire's signature now drying on the final page.

"May I?" Richard asked, though it wasn't really a question. One of the security officers stepped forward and took the folder from Derek's unresisting hands, passing it to Walter Simmons, who had appeared silently at Richard's side with a tablet already open.

"These will be reviewed by our legal team," Richard said. "Given the circumstances under which they were signed — a woman recovering from emergency surgery, under duress, less than two days postpartum, with her premature infants in the room — I suspect a court will find them, at minimum, worth revisiting. Wouldn't you agree, Walter?"

"Wholly consistent with grounds for contesting the settlement, sir," Walter confirmed smoothly. "I'd also note the misspelling on the second child's legal name throughout the document. Sloppy drafting, at best."

Derek's mistress had begun to cry, quietly, her earlier confidence entirely gone. "Derek, what is happening? You told me this would be simple. You said she wouldn't fight it."

"She's not fighting anything," Derek said, though he no longer sounded certain of that. "This is her grandfather trying to intimidate—"

"I don't intimidate," Richard said, and something in his voice made even the security officers straighten slightly. "I inform. And I am informing you, Mr. Whitfield, that you have exactly ten minutes to remove yourself and your companion from this hospital before I have you both escorted out by force, and before I personally ensure every hospital, clinic, and medical facility within this network is aware of exactly how you conducted yourself today."

"You can't do that," Derek said weakly. "That's — that's not how business works. You can't just blacklist someone from an entire industry because—"

May you like

"I own the entire industry, in this state," Richard said, not unkindly, simply stating a fact the way he might state the weather. "Ten minutes, Mr. Whitfield. I'd start counting."
