Chapter 6 - The Night Alessandro Chose His Family

The abandoned freight terminal stood beside the Chicago River like a rusted skeleton.

Rain beat against the warehouse roof. Broken windows glowed faintly beneath the city lights.

Alessandro sat in the back of the armored SUV while a medic wrapped his shoulder.

“Through-and-through,” the medic said. “You need a hospital.”

“I need my daughter.”

“You’re losing blood.”

Alessandro pulled his shirt back over the bandage. “Then stop me from losing more.”

Ella climbed into the vehicle.

Marco immediately objected. “You are staying here.”

“No.”

“Gabriel wants you.”

“He already has Lily.”

“That is exactly why you cannot go inside.”

Ella turned to Alessandro. “Tell him.”

Alessandro checked the magazine in his pistol.

“You’re staying in the command vehicle.”

Her face hardened. “You don’t get to order me away.”

“I am not arguing with you now.”

“Neither am I.”

She leaned closer.

“Lily was taken because both of us kept secrets. I am done hiding while other people decide how this ends.”

Alessandro studied her.

The old version of him would have locked the door and left her with guards.

Instead, he reached beneath the seat and handed her a bulletproof vest.

“You stay behind me.”

“I stay beside you.”

His jaw tightened.

“Behind me.”

“Beside you.”

Marco looked away as though he had no interest in witnessing the argument.

Alessandro finally said, “Close enough that I can reach you.”

Ella took the vest.

“That I can agree to.”

Gabriel had chosen the terminal for a reason.

The building once belonged to Ella’s grandfather.

Inside, faded shipping logos remained painted on the walls.

Alessandro’s team entered through three sides while Marco disabled the external cameras.

Ella followed Alessandro through a narrow loading corridor.

His movements were slower because of the wound, but his focus never broke.

A speaker crackled overhead.

“Welcome home, Ella.”

Gabriel’s voice echoed through the warehouse.

Ella looked up.

“You always deserved to know what your mother tried to protect,” he continued. “These docks were supposed to belong to our family.”

Alessandro pressed a finger to his lips and pointed toward a metal staircase.

They climbed.

Gabriel spoke again.

“Vittorio Vitale wanted the routes. Your mother wanted the truth. I wanted survival.”

Ella called out, “Where is Lily?”

A child’s cry echoed from the main floor.

Alessandro moved faster.

They reached a catwalk overlooking the warehouse.

Lily sat tied to a chair below, still wearing her yellow raincoat.

A man stood behind her with a gun.

Gabriel waited near a table covered with documents and fuel cans.

Ella started toward the stairs.

Alessandro caught her.

“Two men on the east side,” he whispered. “One behind the crates.”

“What about Lily?”

“I see her.”

Gabriel looked up directly at them.

“You were always impatient, Ella.”

Alessandro stepped into view.

“Let her go.”

Gabriel smiled. “The great Alessandro Vitale. Bleeding for a child he ignored for two years.”

“I never ignored her.”

“You watched from shadows. That is not fatherhood.”

“No,” Alessandro said. “It isn’t.”

Ella glanced at him.

He did not look away from Gabriel.

“But I intend to spend the rest of my life correcting that.”

Gabriel poured gasoline across the documents.

“You won’t have a life after tonight.”

“What do you want?” Ella asked.

“The Vitale financial archives. Account numbers. Judges. Police officers. Politicians.”

Alessandro’s expression did not change. “You want my organization.”

“I want what Vittorio stole.”

“You killed Ella’s mother before my father took anything.”

Gabriel’s smile vanished.

“She gave me no choice.”

“People like you always say that,” Ella replied.

Gabriel lifted a lighter.

“Bring me the drive.”

Alessandro reached into his coat and removed a small black device.

Ella stared at him.

“You brought it?”

“It’s encrypted.”

Gabriel nodded toward Lily.

“The drive, or the child dies.”

Lily looked up at Alessandro.

“Daddy.”

His face tightened.

He walked down the metal stairs alone.

Ella whispered, “Alessandro.”

He did not stop.

Gabriel’s men aimed their weapons at him.

Alessandro placed the drive on the table.

“Release her.”

Gabriel picked it up.

“Password?”

“Let Lily go.”

Gabriel gestured.

The man behind Lily cut the rope around her ankles but kept one hand on her shoulder.

“Password.”

Alessandro gave him a sequence of numbers.

Gabriel entered it into a laptop.

The screen flashed.

ACCESS DENIED

Gabriel looked up.

Alessandro smiled faintly.

“You never were good with numbers.”

Gabriel fired.

Alessandro threw himself behind the table as the bullet struck metal.

Marco’s team opened fire from the upper catwalk.

The warehouse erupted.

Ella ran down the stairs.

The guard behind Lily raised his weapon toward Alessandro.

Ella fired first.

The bullet struck the guard’s leg.

He collapsed.

She reached Lily and cut the remaining ropes with a piece of broken metal.

“Mommy!”

“I’ve got you.”

Flames spread across the documents where Gabriel’s lighter had fallen.

Smoke began filling the room.

Alessandro fought Gabriel beside the table.

His wounded shoulder weakened his left arm, but he drove Gabriel backward with two hard strikes.

Gabriel grabbed the fallen gun.

Ella saw it.

“Alessandro!”

Gabriel aimed.

Lily broke from Ella’s arms.

“Daddy!”

Alessandro turned toward his daughter.

Gabriel fired.

Marco tackled Gabriel from the side.

The shot went into the ceiling.

Alessandro crossed the distance in two strides and struck Gabriel to the floor.

He picked up the gun and pressed it against Gabriel’s forehead.

Gabriel laughed through split lips.

“Do it. Show Ella what you are.”

Alessandro’s finger rested on the trigger.

Ella held Lily against her chest.

“Alessandro.”

He looked at her.

She did not tell him Gabriel deserved mercy.

He did not.

She simply said, “Lily is watching.”

His eyes shifted toward his daughter.

Lily stared at him through the smoke, frightened and silent.

Slowly, Alessandro lowered the weapon.

“Marco.”

Marco handcuffed Gabriel.

“You’re letting me live?” Gabriel asked.

Alessandro stepped away.

“No. I’m letting you face every name in those files, every murder, every family you destroyed. You’ll spend the rest of your life watching your empire disappear.”

Flames climbed the nearby support beam.

Marco shouted, “We need to move!”

Alessandro lifted Lily with his uninjured arm.

She clung to his neck.

Ella supported him from the other side as they ran toward the exit.

Behind them, Gabriel screamed that the building belonged to him.

Then the roof began to collapse.

They reached the loading bay seconds before fire consumed the catwalk.

Outside, rain struck their faces.

Alessandro dropped to one knee.

Lily remained wrapped around him.

“You came back,” she whispered.

He held her tighter.

“I will always come back.”

Ella knelt beside them.

Alessandro looked at her through rain and exhaustion.

“I should have told you everything.”

“Yes.”

“I thought secrets could protect you.”

“They nearly killed us.”

“I know.”

Ella touched the side of his face.

“No more secrets.”

“No more.”

Sirens approached from across the river.

For the first time, Alessandro did not order his men to make them disappear.

He handed Marco the drive.

“Give everything to the federal task force.”

Marco stared at him. “Everything?”

“Every account. Every official. Every operation.”

“That will destroy the organization.”

May you like

Alessandro looked at Lily.

“That is the point.”
