Chapter 4 - The Gunman Comes Back

Two days later, Evan—the young man from the grocery store—walked into Marquetti Holdings.

Security stopped him downstairs.

Sadie recognized him on the camera.

“Let him up.”

Enzo looked at her.

“Absolutely not.”

“He knows something.”

“He pointed a gun at you.”

“And then put it down.”

Enzo stared at her.

“That doesn't make him trustworthy.”

“No. But it makes him scared.”

Evan entered surrounded by security.

He looked terrible.

“I didn't come to hurt anybody.”

Enzo stood behind his desk.

“You have thirty seconds.”

Evan looked at Sadie.

“The robbery wasn't my idea.”

Sadie's stomach tightened.

“Whose was it?”

“Gerald's.”

Enzo's eyes hardened.

Evan continued quickly.

“He said the cashier would open the register. I was supposed to take the cash and scare her enough that she'd quit.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

Sadie did.

“He knew I was noticing the shortages.”

Evan nodded.

“He said nobody would get hurt.”

Enzo stepped closer.

“You pointed a loaded weapon at her.”

Evan lowered his head.

“It wasn't loaded.”

Silence.

Sadie looked at Enzo.

Enzo asked, “Who paid Gerald?”

“I heard a name once.”

“What name?”

“Santelli.”

Enzo stopped moving.

Sadie whispered, “Rocco.”

Evan nodded.

“He told Gerald something else.”

“What?”

Evan looked at Sadie.

“That you'd ruined things once before at the bank.”

Sadie felt cold.

Enzo's voice became dangerously quiet.

“Where's Gerald?”

“I don't know.”

“Then why come here?”

“Because Gerald called me last night.”

Evan swallowed.

“He said they're cleaning everything up.”

Enzo understood.

“And you're part of everything.”

Evan nodded.

“I don't want to die.”

Sadie looked at Enzo.

“Help him.”

Enzo turned.

“He threatened your life.”

“He was used.”

“That doesn't erase what he did.”

“No.”

Sadie stepped closer.

“But someone gave you a chance to become different from your father.”

Enzo stared at her.

“Maybe Evan deserves one chance too.”

Salvatore interrupted.

“Boss.”

He held out a tablet.

“We found Gerald.”

Security footage showed Gerald entering a warehouse owned by Bayline Distribution.

Sadie pointed at the screen.

“That's supposed to be abandoned.”

Enzo reached for his coat.

Sadie stood.

“I'm coming.”

“No.”

“I found it.”

“Exactly why you're staying.”

“You said I could question anyone.”

“I meant accountants.”

“You said anyone.”

Enzo looked irritated.

Sadie folded her arms.

“You hired the wrong woman if you wanted obedience.”

Salvatore hid a smile.

Enzo noticed.

“Something funny?”

“Nothing, boss.”

An hour later, they entered the Bayline warehouse with Enzo's attorneys and private security.

No gunfight.

No dramatic ambush.

Just boxes.

Thousands of documents.

Gerald sat alone at a folding table.

When he saw Sadie, his shoulders collapsed.

“You should've stayed a cashier.”

Sadie stepped forward.

“You should've learned bookkeeping.”

Gerald laughed bitterly.

“You think this is about grocery money?”

“No.”

Sadie placed an invoice in front of him.

“This is about Narragansett.”

Gerald's face changed.

Enzo saw it.

“Talk.”

Gerald looked at him.

“You don't understand what your father built.”

“My father is dead.”

“His system isn't.”

“Who runs it?”

Gerald said nothing.

Sadie answered.

“Rocco.”

Gerald closed his eyes.

That was enough.

Then Enzo's phone rang.

Camille.

He answered.

“Enzo?”

Her voice was shaking.

“Rocco knows you're at the warehouse.”

Enzo frowned.

“How?”

A pause.

Then Camille whispered:

May you like

“Because I told him.”
