Chapter 5 - The Fiancée's Secret

Enzo returned to Marquetti Holdings before midnight.
Camille was waiting in his office.
Sadie stayed outside until Enzo said, “Come in.”
Camille looked at her.
“This doesn't concern her.”
Enzo removed his coat.
“It concerns her more than you.”
Camille's face hardened.
“I was trying to protect you.”
“By reporting to Rocco?”
“He told me Sadie was dangerous.”
Sadie laughed once.
“A cashier with spreadsheets?”
“He said you'd become obsessed with fixing your father's reputation.”
“I am,” Enzo said.
Camille turned toward him.
“You're dismantling everything your family built.”
“I'm dismantling what should never have existed.”
“You think legitimacy makes you safe?”
“No.”
Enzo stepped closer.
“But it lets me sleep.”
Camille's eyes filled.
“Rocco said the old businesses were insurance.”
“For whom?”
“For us.”
“There is no us if you've been lying to me.”
Camille went silent.
Enzo understood.
“How long?”
“Eight months.”
Sadie frowned.
“Before I arrived.”
Camille nodded.
“Rocco approached me after you announced the first closures. He said your father would have wanted somebody protecting the family from you.”
Enzo almost smiled.
“My dead father apparently became very talkative.”
Camille lowered her eyes.
“I believed him.”
Enzo removed his engagement ring and placed it on the desk.
Camille stared at it.
“Enzo.”
“We're done.”
“You can't mean that.”
“I don't punish mistakes forever.”
He looked at her.
“But I don't marry people I can't trust.”
Camille left crying.
Sadie remained quiet.
Enzo looked through the window.
“You can say it.”
“Say what?”
“That I should've seen it.”
“No.”
“Everyone else probably will.”
“Everyone else isn't auditing your books.”
He turned.
“What does that mean?”
“It means betrayal looks obvious after you find it.”
Sadie gathered her papers.
“Before that, it looks like trust.”
Enzo studied her.
“You learned that from your husband?”
“Yes.”
“I'm sorry.”
“Don't be. I survived.”
She opened the door.
Enzo spoke behind her.
“Sadie.”
She stopped.
“Why did Rocco target you five years ago?”
“I don't know.”
“Find out.”
She worked until sunrise.
At 6:11 a.m., she found it.
One dormant account from Narragansett Community Bank.
One transfer.
Three million dollars.
Authorized under Sadie's stolen credentials.
Recipient:
T. MARQUETTI HOLDINGS TRUST.
Sadie stared at the screen.
Enzo walked in.
She turned the monitor.
“Your father.”
Enzo read it.
“My father received the money?”
“Yes.”
“So Rocco framed you to hide money going to him.”
“Maybe.”
Sadie clicked another document.
“But your father returned it eleven days later.”
Enzo frowned.
“To whom?”
“Rocco Santelli.”
Everything became clear.
Rocco had been stealing from Tomas Marquetti.
Sadie had accidentally found the transfer.
So Rocco used Gerald to frame her before she could understand what she'd discovered.
Years later, when she started noticing Gerald's grocery theft, Gerald tried to remove her again.
Then Enzo walked into the store.
Sadie whispered, “All three of us were there because of Rocco.”
Enzo looked at her.
“You.”
“Gerald.”
“And Evan.”
Sadie nodded.
Enzo picked up his phone.
“Bring Rocco in.”
Salvatore answered.
“He's already here.”
Enzo looked toward the door.
May you like
Rocco Santelli walked inside.
