Chapter 5 - The Secret in the West Wing

Emma discovered the truth by accident.
A storm knocked out the power. While searching for candles, she entered the west wing.
There she found photographs of Danny before the shooting.
He stood beside a younger man who looked almost identical to him.
Danny’s brother, Ethan.
A second photograph showed Ethan outside a warehouse.
Behind him stood Luke, Danny’s second-in-command.
Emma heard the door open.
Danny entered.
“You were told never to come here.”
“I was looking for candles.”
“You should have called someone.”
“I did. Nobody answered.”
Danny looked at the photograph in her hand.
“Ethan was your brother.”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“He was killed the night I was shot.”
Emma waited.
Danny’s voice lowered. “The bullet that hit me was meant for him. I survived. He didn’t.”
“Do you know who did it?”
“I know someone inside my organization betrayed us.”
“Luke?”
Danny’s eyes sharpened.
“Why would you say that?”
“Because he watches you like he’s waiting for something. And because he always knows where you are.”
Danny said nothing.
Emma pointed to the photograph. “What is that symbol?”
A black wolf had been painted on the warehouse wall.
Danny’s face went pale.
“That symbol belonged to the men who attacked us.”
A floorboard creaked outside.
Danny moved toward the door.
Emma caught his arm. “Wait.”

A shadow passed beneath the hallway light.
Someone had been listening.
