Chapter 7 - A Different Kind of Strength

Six months later, the Hale estate felt different.
The armed guards remained, but they no longer followed Danny through every room. The west wing was opened. Ethan’s photographs were moved into a quiet study.
Danny also began therapy again.
His new therapist lasted three weeks before Danny fired him.
Emma found him in the hallway.
“You fired another therapist?”
“He was irritating.”
“You fired him because he asked how you felt.”
“He asked too many questions.”
“Then answer fewer.”
Danny looked at her. “You’re enjoying this.”
“Immensely.”
He rolled toward the garden doors.
Emma followed.
Outside, sunlight warmed the stone path. Danny stopped beside a low step.
“I want to try something,” he said.
Emma’s smile disappeared. “Are you sure?”
“No.”
“That’s not encouraging.”
“I’m tired of waiting until I’m sure.”
He locked the wheels and pushed himself upward.
His arms trembled.
Emma stood nearby but did not touch him.
Danny pulled his body forward.
For one second, he was standing.
Then his knees buckled.
Emma caught him.
This time, he did not tell her to let go.
He leaned against her, breathing hard.
“I stood,” he whispered.
“You did.”
“It was only a second.”
“One second is more than yesterday.”
Danny looked at her.
“Stay.”
Emma’s expression softened. “I have work.”
“I’ll pay you.”
“You already do.”
“Then stay because you want to.”
Emma was quiet.
Danny continued, “I don’t want you because you clean my house. I don’t want you because you saved me. I want you because when you look at me, you see a man instead of a monster.”
Emma touched his face.
“And what do you see when you look at me?”
Danny covered her hand with his.
“The person who taught me that needing help is not the same as being weak.”
Emma smiled.
Behind them, the mansion doors stood open.
For the first time since the shooting, Danny did not feel trapped inside it.
He had lost the use of his legs, his brother, and two years of his life.
But he had not lost everything.
Somewhere between anger and pain, he had found Emma.
May you like
And with her beside him, Danny finally understood that standing was not always about your legs.
Sometimes, it was about choosing to rise again.
