Chapter 3 - The Offer She Refused

Maya entered the clinical trial eleven days later.
Serafina kept working.
Kieran kept his distance.
Almost too much distance.
He stopped appearing in rooms where she worked. Conversations became formal.
“Good morning, Ms. Torres.”
“Good morning, Mr. Blackwood.”
It should have relieved her.
Instead, by the third week, it irritated her.
One evening she found him in the library.
“Are you avoiding me?”
Kieran lowered the document in his hand.
“You asked for space.”
“I asked for time.”
“I assumed space came with it.”
“You’ve been eating dinner in your study.”
“I frequently eat there.”
“Not before.”
His eyebrow lifted.
“You’ve been monitoring my dining habits?”
Serafina immediately regretted everything.
“Good night.”
She turned.
“Serafina.”
She stopped.
“Come here.”
She glanced over her shoulder.
“That sounded like an order.”
Kieran corrected himself.
“Would you come here?”
She approached.
He opened a drawer and removed an envelope.
Her stomach dropped.
“No.”
“You haven’t even seen it.”
“If that contains money—”
“It doesn’t.”
She opened it.
Inside was a letter.
A job offer.
Not from Kieran.
From the Blackwood Foundation.
Administrative coordinator. Medical outreach division.
Nearly twice her current salary.
Serafina stared at him.
“What is this?”
“An opportunity.”
“Did you arrange it?”
“I asked them to interview you.”
“So yes.”
“I recommended someone who spent eighteen months managing this house better than half my executives manage their departments.”
She dropped the letter onto his desk.
“No.”
Kieran’s expression hardened.
“Why?”
“Because you’re still doing it.”
“Doing what?”
“Rearranging my life.”
“I’m offering you a better job.”
“You’re deciding what better means.”
His frustration surfaced.
“You told me you need money.”
“I do.”
“You hate cleaning this house.”
“I never said that.”
“You have a college application saved on the staff computer.”
Serafina froze.
“What?”
Kieran realized too late what he had revealed.
“You looked at my files?”
“No. IT flagged an unsent form after the system migration.”
“And you remembered it.”
“Yes.”
“Of course you did.”
She grabbed the envelope.
“I don’t want favors.”
“Then earn the position.”
“Without your name attached.”
Kieran stared at her.
Serafina placed the envelope back down.
“If they want me, they can interview me without knowing you sent me.”
“That’s inefficient.”
“That’s freedom.”
The words silenced him.
Finally, Kieran nodded.
“I’ll withdraw the recommendation.”
“Thank you.”
She reached the door.
“Serafina?”
“Yes?”
“You are infuriating.”
She smiled without turning.
“Apparently you’ve noticed.”
---
Three days later, Serafina applied independently.
She got the interview.
Then the job.
When she told Kieran, he simply said, “Congratulations.”
“You knew already.”
“Yes.”
“You didn’t interfere?”
“No.”
“Not even slightly?”
His mouth twitched.
“It nearly killed me.”
She laughed.
And something between them changed.
Not employer and maid.
Not yet lovers.
Something equal enough to become dangerous.
Then Maya disappeared from her hospital room.
May you like
And Serafina’s entire world changed in one phone call.
