Chapter 6 - The Night Serafina Walked Away

Three weeks passed.

Serafina resigned from the foundation.

Not because Kieran demanded it.

Because she needed distance from everything carrying his name.

Maya remained in treatment.

No payments stopped.

No calls came demanding gratitude.

Kieran kept his promise.

That almost made things worse.

One evening Maya looked at Serafina across their apartment.

“You miss him.”

“No.”

“You reorganized the refrigerator twice.”

“That proves nothing.”

“You alphabetized spices.”

Serafina glared at her.

Maya smiled.

“You love him.”

“Maya.”

“I didn’t say forgive him.”

That silenced Serafina.

Her sister continued.

“He messed up.”

“Badly.”

“Yep.”

“He hid something about Dad.”

“Yep.”

“He investigated me.”

“Also creepy.”

“Maya!”

“I’m agreeing with you.”

Serafina laughed despite herself.

Then Maya became serious.

“But after you left, what did he do?”

“Nothing.”

“Exactly.”

Serafina looked away.

“He let you leave.”

“That was what I asked for.”

“And he respected it.”

“Yes.”

“Maybe the question isn’t whether Kieran was controlling.”

“He was.”

“Then maybe the question is whether he can change.”

---

Two nights later, Serafina returned to Blackwood mansion.

Kieran opened the door himself.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

“You came back,” he finally said.

“To talk.”

He stepped aside.

Not touching her.

Not assuming anything.

They went to the kitchen.

The same kitchen.

The same marble island.

Serafina almost laughed at the symmetry.

“I read everything about my father.”

Kieran waited.

“You were telling the truth.”

“Yes.”

“Your father destroyed his career.”

“Yes.”

“And you spent years repairing what he did.”

“I tried.”

Serafina looked at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Kieran’s answer was quiet.

“Cowardice.”

She hadn’t expected that.

“I thought if you knew what my family had done to yours, you would never look at me without seeing him.”

“And instead?”

“I became him in another way.”

Serafina said nothing.

“I controlled information because I was afraid of losing something.”

His eyes met hers.

“You.”

The silence stretched.

“I cannot promise I’ll suddenly become easy,” Kieran continued. “Control kept me alive for most of my adult life.”

“I’m not asking you to become somebody else.”

“Then what are you asking?”

“Whether you understand the difference between protecting someone and controlling them.”

Kieran thought before answering.

“Protection gives them a choice.”

Serafina nodded.

“And control?”

“Takes the choice away.”

“Good.”

He gave her a faint smile.

“Did I pass?”

“This isn’t an interview.”

“Everything with you feels like one.”

She almost smiled.

Then Kieran became serious.

“I love you.”

Serafina froze.

“I’ve probably loved you longer than I understood what I was doing.”

“Kieran—”

“You don’t need to answer.”

“You’re learning.”

“Slowly.”

“Painfully?”

“Extremely.”

She laughed.

Then stepped closer.

“I’m still angry.”

“You should be.”

“I still don’t completely trust you.”

“I’ll earn it.”

“And I’m not moving back here.”

His eyebrows lifted.

“Back?”

“To work.”

Understanding appeared.

“You thought I meant—”

“Don’t ruin this.”

For the first time in weeks, Kieran laughed.

Serafina looked into his eyes.

“I love you too.”

His laughter stopped.

“But,” she added.

“Of course there’s a but.”

“Love doesn’t make me yours.”

Kieran reached toward her, then stopped.

He waited.

Serafina closed the distance herself.

She took his hand.

“No,” he said softly. “It makes me lucky you chose me.”

May you like

This time, she kissed him.
