Chapter 6 - The Secret My Husband Left Behind

With Calder arrested and Anthony cooperating with federal prosecutors, the danger should have ended.

Instead, the investigation uncovered something that changed my understanding of Ryan’s death.

A federal agent named Melissa Grant came to Belladonna two weeks later.

She placed a photograph on Dominic’s desk.

It showed my husband leaving a construction site with Anthony Moretti.

My throat tightened.

“That’s Ryan.”

Agent Grant nodded.

“Your husband worked as a site safety inspector for a construction company partially controlled by Victor Calder.”

“He was a foreman.”

“He was promoted three months before his death. According to his records, he discovered the company was using unsafe materials while billing the city for higher-grade supplies.”

The room tilted beneath me.

“Ryan died because a support platform collapsed.”

“We believe the collapse may have been arranged.”

I gripped the edge of the desk.

Dominic stood beside me.

“Who ordered it?” he asked.

“Calder. Anthony helped destroy the inspection records.”

I looked at the photograph again.

“Why was Ryan meeting Anthony?”

“He was trying to report the fraud.”

A sound escaped me, somewhere between a breath and a sob.

For eight months, I had believed Ryan died because of an accident.

He had died trying to protect people.

Agent Grant continued.

“We recovered a voicemail from an old backup server. It was intended for you.”

She placed a phone on the desk and pressed play.

Ryan’s voice filled the room.

“Em, I don’t know when you’ll hear this. Something’s wrong at the site. They’re using defective steel, and someone higher up knows about it. I’m meeting a man tonight who says he can help. I don’t want to scare you, but if anything happens, there’s a flash drive inside Ava’s nursery lamp. I love you. Tell our girl I loved her every second.”

My knees gave way.

Dominic caught me before I hit the floor.

I pressed both hands over my mouth.

Ryan had known.

He had left evidence.

And I had spent eight months sleeping only a few feet from it.

“We need the drive,” Agent Grant said gently.

“It’s at my apartment.”

Dominic immediately called Marco.

An hour later, we entered the apartment with three federal agents.

The rooms looked smaller than I remembered.

Ava’s nursery occupied one corner of my bedroom. Ryan had painted yellow stars above the crib before she was born.

I unscrewed the base of the lamp.

A small flash drive fell into my palm.

The files contained photographs, invoices and recorded conversations proving Calder’s company had knowingly used defective materials in five city projects.

Ryan had documented everything.

Agent Grant took the drive.

“This could add decades to Calder’s sentence.”

I looked at Dominic.

“Anthony knew?”

“He may have.”

“He knew Ryan was my husband. He saw my employment records.”

Dominic’s expression darkened.

“That is why he reacted when you found the invoices.”

“He didn’t just see a waitress. He saw Ryan’s widow.”

Agent Grant closed her evidence bag.

“Anthony has requested to speak with you.”

“No,” Dominic said immediately.

I looked at him.

“I’ll do it.”

“You owe him nothing.”

“I’m not doing it for him.”

The meeting took place through reinforced glass at the federal detention center.

Anthony looked smaller without his expensive suit.

He picked up the phone.

I did the same.

“You knew my husband,” I said.

He lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

“You helped Calder kill him.”

“I didn’t know Calder planned the collapse.”

“But you erased the inspection reports afterward.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Calder had evidence against me. I thought if I refused, he would destroy my family.”

“You destroyed mine instead.”

Anthony pressed a hand against the glass.

“I’m sorry.”

“Sorry does not teach Ava to say ‘Daddy.’ Sorry does not bring Ryan home.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

He swallowed.

“What do you want from me?”

“The truth. Every name, every payment, every official Calder bought. You tell the prosecutors everything.”

“He’ll have me killed.”

I stared at him.

“My husband knew that risk and told the truth anyway.”

Anthony’s face tightened.

“He was braver than I was.”

“Yes,” I said. “He was.”

I stood to leave.

“Emily.”

I looked back.

“Dominic cares about you,” Anthony said. “That makes you dangerous to him.”

“No. It makes him accountable to someone other than himself.”

Outside, Dominic waited near the elevators.

“How did it go?” he asked.

“I didn’t forgive him.”

“You were not required to.”

“But I stopped carrying the question of whether Ryan’s death was meaningless.”

Dominic’s gaze softened.

“It wasn’t.”

“No.”

I looked toward the city beyond the glass doors.

“He saved lives.”

“So did you.”

“I opened invoices.”

“You finished what he started.”

May you like

I reached for Dominic’s hand.

For once, he did not look surprised when I held it.
