Chapter 4 - What Evelyn Never Knew

Victor sank into a chair.

Caleb looked toward the front door.

Marco shook his head.

“Don't.”

Caleb stopped.

I walked toward Victor.

“My wife doesn't know.”

Victor stared at me.

“She thinks I own hotels.”

“You do.”

“I own many things.”

Silence.

“I kept this part of my life away from her because she deserved better.”

Victor swallowed.

“So this is some criminal threat?”

“No.”

That surprised him.

I held up the folder.

“This is evidence.”

I placed it on the table.

“Kidnapping.”

Another document.

“Forgery.”

Then the hospital report Marco had obtained legally through Evelyn's case file.

“Assault.”

I looked around the room.

“And attempted murder will be for the prosecutor to decide.”

Caleb laughed nervously.

“You think we're afraid of cops?”

“No.”

I turned toward him.

“You're afraid of losing everything.”

His smile disappeared.

“And you already have.”

Victor stood.

“Wait.”

“No.”

“We can fix this.”

I stared at him.

“My wife is unconscious.”

“I didn't mean—”

“You removed her coat.”

Victor said nothing.

“You left her in freezing weather.”

“She wasn't supposed to—”

He stopped.

I moved closer.

“Finish that sentence.”

Victor couldn't.

Marco's phone vibrated.

He checked it.

“Police are two minutes away.”

Caleb looked stunned.

“You called the police?”

“I didn't.”

Marco nodded toward the window.

“The hospital did.”

I looked at Victor.

“And unlike you, I won't stop them.”

Victor suddenly understood.

I wasn't going to give him the violent revenge he expected.

I was going to let him live.

Long enough to watch his world collapse.
