Chapter 6 - The Bellucci Name

Six months later, Victor Hale entered a courtroom without the expensive suit, entourage, or arrogance that had once defined him.

His empire was gone.

Investigators uncovered financial fraud stretching back eleven years.

Hale Maritime was placed under independent management.

Caleb, Ryan, Thomas, and the others faced separate charges related to Evelyn's assault and abduction.

None of them laughed anymore.

Evelyn never attended their hearings.

She didn't need to.

She had something else to build.

The Hale shares eventually returned to her control after the forged transfer was voided.

She sold them.

Every one.

Then she used part of the money to establish a foundation providing emergency housing and legal assistance to women escaping violent families.

She named it The Red Scarf Foundation.

I kept the original scarf.

Torn.

Bloodstained.

Still sealed inside the hospital evidence bag after the case ended.

It sits inside my desk.

Not because I enjoy remembering that night.

Because I need to.

Power had once meant something very different to me.

Ports.

Territory.

Men.

Fear.

Then one winter night taught me that the greatest power I possessed wasn't the ability to destroy someone.

It was the ability to decide what happened after I had every reason to.

A year after the attack, Evelyn stood beside me on the balcony of our home.

Snow was falling.

She rested her head against my shoulder.

“You're staring again.”

“At what?”

“My stomach.”

I smiled.

She was five months pregnant.

This time, nobody outside our closest circle knew.

Evelyn placed my hand against the small curve beneath her sweater.

A tiny movement pressed against my palm.

I froze.

She smiled.

“You felt that?”

“Yes.”

“Adrian Bellucci speechless.”

“Don't tell Marco.”

“I’m absolutely telling Marco.”

I laughed.

Below us, the city lights stretched toward the harbor.

Somewhere beyond them were businesses carrying my name.

Men who still feared it.

Enemies who still whispered it.

But none of that mattered on that balcony.

I looked at Evelyn.

“You know what I want?”

“What?”

“For this child never to understand why people are afraid of the Bellucci name.”

She studied me.

“Then give them another reason to remember it.”

“What reason?”

She placed my hand over our unborn child again.

“That when Adrian Bellucci finally had enough power to become anything he wanted…”

She smiled.

“…he chose to become a good father.”

For once, I didn't have an answer.

I simply held my wife while snow fell over the city.

And for the first time in my life, I realized I didn't want my child to inherit my empire.

I wanted my child to inherit the man I became after I nearly lost everything.
