Chapter 6 - A Father Who Never Knew

Moretti Trust occupied an old limestone building near Wall Street.

At 11:54 p.m., the streets around it were nearly empty.

Vincent drove.

Evelyn sat beside him.

No convoy.

No visible backup.

The brass key rested in her hand.

“You’re sure Luca followed the plan?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“You trust him?”

“With my life.”

“This isn’t your life.”

Vincent glanced at her.

“I know.”

They stopped beneath the bank’s stone entrance.

Before getting out, Evelyn reached for his arm.

“Vincent.”

He looked at her.

“If this goes wrong—”

“It won’t.”

“Don’t do that.”

“Do what?”

“Pretend certainty is a plan.”

He looked forward.

“You want the truth?”

“Yes.”

“I’m terrified.”

She was surprised.

Vincent continued.

“I have been afraid maybe five times in my life.”

“And this is one of them?”

“This is all five combined.”

Evelyn’s expression softened.

“He’ll be okay.”

Vincent looked at her.

“You believe that?”

“I have to.”

They entered.

Alessandro waited in the marble lobby with six armed men.

Noah sat in a chair beside him.

Alive.

Unhurt.

Evelyn rushed forward.

One guard blocked her.

“Mom!”

“Noah.”

Vincent stopped her before she did something reckless.

“He’s okay.”

Alessandro smiled.

“Very touching reunion.”

Vincent looked at Noah.

“You hurt?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Alessandro gestured toward the elevator.

“Shall we?”

They descended three floors underground.

The vault level was silent.

A bank manager waited nervously beside a biometric terminal.

Alessandro placed a hand on Noah’s shoulder.

Evelyn’s eyes hardened.

“Take your hand off him.”

Alessandro smiled.

“Protective.”

Vincent said quietly, “Listen to her.”

Alessandro removed his hand.

The manager pointed toward the terminal.

“Box 46 requires key authorization and genetic confirmation.”

Alessandro looked at Evelyn.

“The key.”

She handed it over.

He inserted it.

A green light appeared.

“Genetic confirmation.”

Alessandro pushed Noah forward.

Vincent stepped between them.

“I’ll do it.”

Alessandro frowned.

“This requires the boy.”

“No.”

Marco’s voice echoed from the far end of the vault.

Everyone turned.

He stepped from behind a security door.

Alessandro’s expression darkened.

“You.”

Marco held up a document.

“Dominic amended the access requirements.”

Alessandro looked at Vincent.

“What did you do?”

“Nothing.”

Marco continued.

“The box opens with a direct paternal match.”

Alessandro’s face changed.

Vincent placed his finger on the scanner.

A light pulsed.

The terminal displayed:

PATERNAL MATCH CONFIRMED.

Noah looked at the screen.

Then at Vincent.

Something passed between them.

Not trust yet.

But something beginning.

The vault clicked.

A narrow deposit drawer slid open.

Inside was a black leather notebook.

A flash drive.

And a sealed envelope.

Alessandro stepped forward.

“Give it to me.”

Vincent took the ledger.

“No.”

Two of Alessandro’s men raised weapons.

Evelyn pulled Noah behind her.

Alessandro’s patience vanished.

“Vincent.”

“You spent seven years searching for this.”

“Give it to me.”

“What’s in it?”

“You know what’s in it.”

“I want to hear you say it.”

Alessandro stared.

Vincent opened the first page.

Names.

Dates.

Dollar amounts.

Judges.

Detectives.

Union officials.

Executives.

Criminal families.

Then Vincent saw a name that surprised him.

Alessandro Moretti.

Dozens of entries.

Payments received.

Information sold.

Operations sabotaged.

And one entry from seven years earlier.

E.C. relocation operation. Objective: separate V.M. from potential heir.

Vincent showed Evelyn.

She stared at the words.

There it was.

Her entire nightmare reduced to one line of ink.

Vincent looked at his uncle.

“You destroyed three lives because you were afraid of a baby.”

Alessandro laughed softly.

“You still don’t understand.”

“Explain it.”

“Dominic was preparing to replace me with you.”

Vincent frowned.

“You were never in line to replace him.”

“I built half that empire.”

“You stole from it.”

“I modernized it.”

“You sold it.”

Alessandro’s anger finally showed.

“I spent thirty years keeping that family alive while Dominic treated me like a servant.”

“And your solution was to murder Evelyn?”

“I told you. I wanted her gone.”

“You fired into her apartment.”

“I did what was necessary.”

Noah spoke.

“You lie a lot.”

Everyone looked at him.

Alessandro stared.

Noah stayed behind Evelyn but did not look away.

“You said my mom was safe if she came here.”

“Noah,” Evelyn whispered.

“He lies.”

Alessandro stepped toward him.

Vincent moved instantly.

“Don’t.”

One word.

Alessandro stopped.

Then came the sound of metal doors locking behind them.

Alessandro looked around.

“What is this?”

Vincent smiled faintly.

“The rest of Dominic’s plan.”

Alessandro’s men turned toward the exits.

Locked.

Then speakers in the ceiling activated.

Luca’s voice.

“Evening.”

Alessandro looked upward.

Vincent said, “You really thought I came alone?”

“You were searched.”

“I was.”

“And your men?”

“Never entered the building.”

The bank manager backed away.

Alessandro suddenly understood.

“The cameras.”

Vincent nodded.

“Everything you said is recorded.”

Alessandro’s face drained.

Evelyn looked toward Vincent.

“You planned this?”

“Marco did.”

Marco nodded.

“Dominic prepared the recording system years ago.”

Alessandro pointed at him.

“You traitorous old fool.”

Marco’s expression remained calm.

“No. I was a coward for seven years.”

He looked at Evelyn.

“I’m trying to stop being one.”

Sirens sounded outside.

Alessandro laughed.

“You think police matter?”

Vincent raised the ledger.

“Not local police.”

Marco said, “Federal agents received copies the moment the box opened.”

Alessandro stared.

“No.”

Vincent opened Dominic’s sealed envelope.

Inside was one final letter.

He read the first line.

“Vincent, if you have reached this point, then Alessandro has already lost.”

Alessandro lunged.

Everything happened at once.

One of his men grabbed Evelyn.

Another reached for Noah.

Vincent struck the first man.

The vault erupted into chaos.

Noah ducked behind a pillar.

Evelyn drove her elbow into her attacker’s ribs and tore free.

Alessandro grabbed the ledger.

Vincent caught him.

The two men slammed into the metal deposit boxes.

Alessandro struck Vincent across the jaw.

Vincent hit back.

Hard.

Alessandro staggered.

“You always were sentimental,” Alessandro spat.

Vincent wiped blood from his mouth.

“And you always confused love with weakness.”

Alessandro reached inside his jacket.

Evelyn saw the weapon.

“Vincent!”

Before Alessandro could raise it, Noah did something no one expected.

He grabbed the brass key from the floor and threw it.

It struck Alessandro’s hand.

The pistol fell.

Vincent kicked it away.

Federal agents burst through the security door seconds later.

“Hands where we can see them!”

Alessandro looked around.

No escape.

No loyal men remaining.

No ledger.

No power.

He stared at Vincent.

“You think this ends because men with badges walked in?”

Vincent shook his head.

“No.”

He looked toward Evelyn and Noah.

“It ends because I’m done letting you decide what my family becomes.”

Agents forced Alessandro to his knees.

Vincent did not watch.

He went to Noah.

The boy looked shaken now.

Vincent crouched.

“You okay?”

Noah nodded.

Then his lip trembled.

“I thought he was going to shoot you.”

Vincent’s face softened.

“He didn’t.”

Noah suddenly wrapped his arms around him.

Vincent froze.

For a heartbeat, he didn’t move.

Then his arms came around his son.

Carefully.

Almost uncertainly.

Noah held tighter.

Evelyn watched them.

Vincent closed his eyes.

Seven years could not be returned.

But for the first time, he understood that maybe something could still be built after them.

Noah whispered against his shoulder.

“Can I call you Dad now?”

Vincent’s composure broke completely.

He nodded.

“You can call me whatever you want.”

Noah pulled back.

“Dad is easier.”

Vincent laughed through tears.

“Dad is good.”

Evelyn turned away for a second, wiping her eyes.

May you like

Vincent looked at her.

This time, she didn’t hide.
