Chapter 2 - The Little Girl Who Saw Too Much

Working inside the Calloway mansion changed Maya’s opinion of Damian.

The newspapers described him as ruthless.

The town described him as dangerous.

But Lily saw him differently.

Children often noticed things adults ignored.

Every morning, Lily would find Damian somewhere in the house.

Sometimes in the library.

Sometimes near the ocean windows.

Sometimes sitting alone at breakfast.

And every time, she treated him like he was just another person.

Not a powerful businessman.

Not a feared man.

Just Damian.

One morning, Lily walked into the dining room holding her stuffed rabbit.

“You forgot breakfast.”

Damian looked up from his documents.

“I did not.”

“You did.”

“I had coffee.”

“That’s not breakfast.”

Damian stared at the three-year-old girl.

“You’re giving me advice?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you look sad.”

The room went quiet.

Maya, standing nearby, froze.

Nobody spoke to Damian that way.

But he didn’t get angry.

Instead, he slowly put down his coffee.

“Do I?”

Lily nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

She thought for a moment.

“Because you look like my daddy before he stopped singing.”

Maya’s expression changed.

“Lily…”

But Damian didn’t interrupt.

He simply asked:

“What happened to your father?”

Maya answered quietly.

“He passed away.”

Damian looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

It was a simple sentence.

But Maya knew Damian Calloway was not a man who said things he didn’t mean.

“Thank you,” she replied.

After that day, something changed.

Damian started making sure Lily had breakfast.

He started asking Maya if she needed anything.

He started noticing small things.

Like the fact that Maya always worked overtime.

Like the fact that her shoes were worn.

Like the fact that she never bought anything for herself.

Maya noticed too.

“You don’t have to keep doing that,” she said one evening when Damian left a new coat for Lily.

“Doing what?”

“Taking care of us.”

Damian looked confused.

“I’m paying your salary.”

“That’s not what I mean.”

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Damian said:

“Lily deserves to be taken care of.”

Maya looked at him carefully.

“And what about you?”

Damian’s expression hardened slightly.

“I’m fine.”

She smiled sadly.

“That’s what lonely people always say.”

For once, Damian had no answer.

---

But while Damian was becoming closer to Maya and Lily, someone inside the Calloway family was watching.

Someone who didn’t like the changes.

Someone who believed Damian was becoming weak.

Damian’s younger cousin, Adrian Calloway, had spent years waiting for a chance to take control.

And now he saw one.

A housekeeper.

A child.

A soft spot.

A weakness.

Adrian stood inside his office overlooking the ocean.

“You’re telling me the girl was at the mansion?”

The man across from him nodded.

“Yes.”

“And Damian cares about her?”

“More than anyone expected.”

Adrian smiled.

“Good.”

He looked toward the waves.

“For years, everyone believed Damian Calloway had no weakness.”

He turned.

“Now he does.”

---

That night, Lily woke up because she heard voices.

Not her mother.

Not Damian.

Strangers.

She quietly opened her bedroom door.

Down the hallway, she saw two men near the service entrance.

One of them was someone she recognized.

Someone who smiled at her every day.

Someone who brought candy when Damian wasn’t looking.

Adrian Calloway.

But tonight, he wasn’t smiling.

“You should have handled this already,” Adrian said.

The other man lowered his voice.

“She knows too much.”

Lily stopped breathing.

The man continued.

“The woman found the records.”

Adrian’s face changed.

“Then we make sure she never talks.”

Lily covered her mouth.

She didn’t understand everything.

But she understood one thing.

They were talking about her mommy.

And for the first time in her little life…

Lily was afraid of someone inside the mansion.
