Chapter 2 - The Photograph That Changed Everything

The car had barely reached the main road when Lorenzo’s phone vibrated again.

Unknown number.

One message.

One picture.

He opened it.

And everything stopped.

It was Naomi.

The same warehouse.

The same chair.

But this time, Matio was standing behind her.

Smiling.

His arm around her shoulder.

Like they were friends.

Like nothing had happened.

Below the image were three words.

SHE WORKS FOR ME.

Lorenzo stared at the screen.

The man who survived wars.

The man who controlled entire criminal networks.

The man who never showed fear.

Was silent.

Naomi noticed his expression.

“What happened?”

He turned the phone toward her.

Her face changed instantly.

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“No, that’s not what it looks like.”

Lorenzo watched her carefully.

“Then tell me what it looks like.”

Naomi shook her head.

“I can explain.”

“You have five minutes.”

Her breathing became faster.

“Please.”

Lorenzo’s voice remained calm.

But dangerous.

“Because when we reach the dock, I need to know who is lying.”

Naomi looked down.

Then whispered:

“Me.”

Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed.

“What?”

She closed her eyes.

“I lied.”

The car became silent.

“But not about tonight.”

She looked at him.

“I knew Matio before.”

Lorenzo said nothing.

“Six months ago, he paid me.”

“For what?”

“To watch you.”

The words landed heavily.

Naomi continued.

“I was supposed to report where you went. Who you met. What your routines were.”

Lorenzo’s face hardened.

“And you did.”

“Yes.”

She didn’t deny it.

“But I never gave him anything important.”

“Why should I believe that?”

“Because when he asked me to betray you completely, I refused.”

“What did he ask?”

Naomi’s eyes filled with tears.

“To put a tracker on your car.”

Lorenzo looked away.

“When I refused, he threatened my sister.”

That made him turn back.

“Your sister?”

“Amaya.”

Naomi wiped her tears.

“She’s sick. Hospital bills were destroying us. I thought taking money from Matio was the only way I could save her.”

Lorenzo remained silent.

Then he asked:

“Why tell me now?”

“Because I realized something.”

“What?”

“He was never using me to hurt you.”

She looked at him.

“He was using me so that if you found me, you would never trust me.”

The words stayed between them.

Because Lorenzo knew.

That was exactly something Matio would do.

Manipulation.

Division.

Destroying trust before attacking.

The SUV stopped.

Lorenzo looked outside.

A quiet street.

A small house.

Naomi frowned.

“Where are we?”

“My safe place.”

“You have one?”

“Everyone needs somewhere nobody knows.”

He opened the door.

Then looked at her.

“Especially people like me.”

---

Inside the house, Lorenzo cleaned the cuts on Naomi’s wrists.

She watched him quietly.

The most feared man in London was sitting there, carefully treating wounds caused by someone he once called family.

“Why are you helping me?”

Lorenzo didn’t look up.

“Because you needed help.”

“That’s not how people describe you.”

“No.”

He finished wrapping her wrist.

“They usually describe me worse.”

Naomi almost smiled.

Almost.

Then she whispered:

“My sister…”

Lorenzo stood.

“What hospital?”

She looked confused.

“Why?”

“What hospital, Naomi?”

“Brixton General.”

He took out his phone.

Made one call.

“Send payment for all medical expenses for Amaya Blake.”

Naomi froze.

“Lorenzo…”

“No questions.”

“But you don’t even know me.”

He looked at her.

“I know enough.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You just saved my sister.”

Lorenzo looked away.

“Family matters.”

A pause.

“Even when it’s not mine.”

For the first time since the warehouse, Naomi felt something other than fear.

She felt safe.

But neither of them knew…

May you like

The real war had not started yet.
