Chapter 5 - The Truth Naomi Never Told Him

The confrontation ended before sunrise.

Matio was gone.

Not defeated.

Not forgiven.

Just exposed.

And Lorenzo knew men like Matio were the most dangerous when they had nothing left.

Back at the safe house, Naomi sat quietly on the sofa.

She watched Lorenzo clean the small cut on his hand from the dock.

“You should hate me.”

Lorenzo didn’t look up.

“Why?”

“Because I lied.”

He wrapped the bandage around his hand.

“You did.”

Naomi looked down.

“I was desperate.”

“I know.”

“You still don’t understand.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“Then explain.”

Her eyes filled.

“My sister wasn’t the only reason.”

A silence.

“What else?”

Naomi took a deep breath.

“I was trying to find information about Matio.”

Lorenzo frowned.

“What?”

“When I started working for him, I thought he was just using me to watch you.”

She shook her head.

“Then I found documents.”

“What documents?”

“Proof that he had been moving money behind your back for years.”

Lorenzo became still.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Naomi looked away.

“Because I didn’t know who I could trust.”

That answer hurt because Lorenzo understood it.

She had been trapped in the same situation he was now.

Trusting the wrong person.

Afraid of everyone.

“I thought if I came to you, Matio would kill my sister.”

Lorenzo’s expression softened slightly.

“You should have told me.”

“I know.”

Her voice broke.

“I was wrong.”

A long silence passed.

Then Lorenzo sat beside her.

Not too close.

Just close enough.

“Naomi.”

She looked at him.

“You made mistakes.”

Tears formed in her eyes.

“But you’re not Matio.”

That was the first time someone had said that to her.

Not judged her.

Not used her.

Just separated her mistakes from who she was.

Naomi looked down.

“Why are you different from what everyone says?”

Lorenzo almost smiled.

“I’m not.”

“Yes, you are.”

She looked at him.

“Everyone says you’re cold.”

A pause.

“But you paid my sister’s medical bills.”

Lorenzo looked away.

“Everyone says you don’t care.”

“But you came back for me.”

Silence.

Naomi whispered:

“Why?”

Lorenzo had no answer.

At least not one he wanted to admit.

Because the truth scared him more than any enemy.

Somewhere between the warehouse and the safe house…

Naomi had stopped being a problem.

She had become someone he wanted to protect.

Later that morning, Carlo entered the room.

“Boss.”

Lorenzo stood.

“What?”

“We found Matio’s backup location.”

Naomi looked worried.

“Where?”

Carlo hesitated.

“Toronto.”

Lorenzo’s face changed.

Matio wasn’t running.

He was preparing.

“He has people there,” Carlo continued.

“Money?”

“Yes.”

“Weapons?”

“Yes.”

Lorenzo grabbed his coat.

Naomi stood.

“You’re going after him.”

“Yes.”

“Then I’m coming.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“No.”

“Lorenzo—”

“This is my war.”

She stepped closer.

“No.”

Her voice was calm.

“It started with me.”

A pause.

“And I’m tired of being the person everyone moves around like a piece on a chessboard.”

Lorenzo studied her.

The frightened woman from the warehouse was gone.

The woman standing in front of him now was different.

Stronger.

He finally nodded.

“Fine.”

Naomi exhaled.

“But you follow my rules.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“What rules?”

Lorenzo opened the door.

“You stay alive.”

For the first time, Naomi smiled.

A real smile.

Small.

But real.

And Lorenzo realized something dangerous.

He didn’t just want to defeat Matio anymore.

May you like

He wanted a future where Naomi could finally stop running.
