Chapter 3 - The $1.84 Million Question

The following morning, Alex sat in the library with Maya, Detective Torres, two auditors, and the foundation's attorney.

The white folder lay on the table.

One sentence had been highlighted:

No undisclosed related-party transactions or material conflicts exist.

Alex read it twice.

Then he looked at Maya.

“She wanted you to certify this?”

“Yes.”

“Could you?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Maya opened her laptop.

“Because I found payments.”

She turned the screen toward him.

“Arden Social & Events received $1.84 million from the foundation over eighteen months.”

“For what?”

“Galas. Retreats. Fundraisers. Venue rentals.”

“That doesn't sound unusual.”

“It wasn't.”

Maya clicked another document.

“Until I compared the invoices.”

Several charges appeared.

$94,000.

$117,500.

$86,000.

Alex frowned.

“For dinners?”

“Sometimes.”

“That’s insane.”

“Exactly.”

The library door opened.

A man carrying a cardboard box entered.

Alex recognized him immediately.

“Owen?”

Owen Keller had served as the foundation's CFO for eight years.

He looked terrible.

Unshaven.

Exhausted.

Terrified.

“I need to speak with the investigators.”

Torres stood.

“About?”

Owen put the box down.

“Everything I should have given the auditors months ago.”

Alex stared at him.

“You knew?”

Owen swallowed.

“I knew enough.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Your mother threatened me.”

Evelyn's attorney, standing near the door, objected.

“Be careful what you accuse my client of.”

Owen pulled out printed emails.

“I don't have to accuse her.”

He dropped them onto the table.

“She wrote it down.”

The first email read:

MAYA WILL SIGN BEFORE THURSDAY.

The second:

IF SHE REFUSES, REMOVE HER FROM THE PROCESS.

Then another:

THE DINNER WILL HANDLE IT.

Maya stared.

“The dinner?”

Owen nodded.

“She wanted witnesses.”

“To what?”

“To you being unstable.”

Alex leaned forward.

Owen continued.

“The plan wasn't just to get your signature.”

Maya's face hardened.

“What was it?”

“If you refused, Evelyn intended to provoke an argument during dinner.”

“With twelve foundation people watching?”

“Yes.”

“She wanted them to see me lose control.”

“Yes.”

Alex looked toward the ruined dining room.

Suddenly everything made sense.

The guests.

The pressure.

The serving.

Maya's gray clothing.

Chloe being forced into the kitchen.

“They were props,” Alex said.

Owen looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

Maya whispered, “Including Chloe.”

Owen didn't answer.

He didn't have to.

Detective Torres picked up another document.

“Who owns Arden Social & Events?”

Owen hesitated.

“Officially?”

Alex's eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?”

“Seventy percent belongs to Evelyn Vance.”

Alex stared at him.

“My mother owns the company receiving foundation money?”

“Yes.”

“And that wasn't disclosed?”

“No.”

“What does Arden own?”

Owen slowly exhaled.

“Rosemont Hall.”

Alex knew the property.

Everyone did.

A sprawling luxury wedding estate outside the city.

“What does that have to do with this?”

Owen opened another file.

“Rosemont was purchased for $6.2 million.”

“And?”

“It’s drowning in debt.”

“How badly?”

“Badly enough that without foundation contracts, Arden could default.”

Maya closed her eyes.

“That’s why she needed the statement.”

Owen nodded.

“If the audit expands into related-party transactions, the payments get examined.”

“And Rosemont loses financing,” Maya said.

“Probably.”

Alex sat back.

He finally understood.

His mother hadn't simply mistreated his wife.

She had built an entire strategy.

A signature if Maya cooperated.

A credibility attack if she refused.

And Chloe…

Alex looked toward the doorway.

His daughter stood there holding a stuffed rabbit.

“Daddy?”

He immediately softened.

“What are you doing awake?”

“Mommy wasn't there.”

Maya went to her.

Alex watched them embrace.

Then Owen quietly said:

“There’s something else.”

Alex turned.

“What?”

Owen removed his phone.

“The police recovered a voice memo from Evelyn's cloud backup.”

Detective Torres took the phone.

She pressed play.

Evelyn's voice filled the room.

“Need Maya's signature. If not, attack credibility. Joanne out. Dinner Thursday.”

A pause.

Then four words.

“Chloe as attachment point.”

Maya froze.

Alex didn't move.

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Finally Alex asked:

“What does ‘attachment point’ mean?”

Owen looked at Chloe.

May you like

“You already know.”
