Chapter 4 - Rosemont Hall

By Friday, investigators had warrants.

By Saturday, Rosemont Hall had stopped taking new bookings.

By Monday, Evelyn Vance's carefully protected world had begun collapsing.

But Alex still had one question.

Why?

He confronted his mother in an interview room with attorneys present.

“You had money.”

Evelyn stared across the table.

“So?”

“You had investments. Property. Trust income.”

“I built something of my own.”

“Rosemont?”

“Yes.”

“You stole foundation money to keep it alive.”

“I redirected business.”

“To a company you secretly controlled.”

“I created value.”

Alex shook his head.

“You created invoices.”

Her jaw tightened.

“You don't understand what it means to spend your entire life being someone's wife and then someone's mother.”

“This isn't about your feelings.”

“It is absolutely about my life.”

“No.”

Alex leaned forward.

“This is about Maya's hands.”

Evelyn looked away.

“This is about Chloe crying under water you knew was too hot.”

“I never intended—”

“Don't.”

His voice remained quiet.

“That sentence won't save you.”

For the first time, Evelyn's confidence cracked.

“I needed time.”

“For what?”

“To refinance Rosemont.”

“Why?”

“Because once the audit discovered Arden, the banks would panic.”

“So Maya had to lie.”

“She had to sign one statement.”

“A false statement.”

“A technical statement.”

Alex laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“And when she refused?”

Evelyn said nothing.

“You took her phone.”

Silence.

“You hurt her.”

“I didn't mean for her hands—”

“You grabbed her.”

“She was leaving.”

“And then you used my daughter.”

Evelyn finally raised her voice.

“I would never hurt Chloe!”

Alex stared at her.

“You already did.”

That ended the conversation.

But the financial investigation was only beginning.

Owen provided access to archived records.

Investigators discovered inflated event charges, duplicate invoices, consulting fees, and payments routed through subcontractors.

The $1.84 million was merely what Maya had noticed first.

The deeper review suggested several million dollars in questionable transactions.

One afternoon, Maya sat across from Alex at their temporary apartment.

Chloe colored quietly nearby.

Alex closed the investigator's report.

“I should've seen something.”

Maya shook her head.

“Don't do that.”

“She was my mother.”

“Exactly.”

“I brought you into that family.”

“You didn't do this.”

“I trusted her.”

“So did I.”

Alex looked at Maya's bandaged hands.

“You were afraid to call me.”

“I was afraid you'd have to choose.”

“Between you and her?”

Maya nodded.

Alex reached across the table carefully.

“There was never a choice.”

Maya looked at him.

“You say that now.”

“I should've made sure you knew it before.”

That silenced her.

Then Chloe appeared beside them.

“Are we going home?”

Alex lifted her onto his lap.

“Eventually.”

“Grandma there?”

“No.”

Chloe thought about it.

“Is Grandma mad?”

Alex chose his words carefully.

“Grandma made some very bad choices.”

“Is she bad?”

Maya and Alex exchanged a look.

Alex answered.

“People are responsible for what they do. Even people we love.”

Chloe frowned.

“Did she hurt Mommy?”

Maya's eyes filled.

Alex didn't lie.

“Yes.”

“And me?”

“Yes.”

Chloe leaned against him.

“Are you gonna yell?”

Alex remembered the pot.

The crashing glasses.

His daughter covering her ears.

“No.”

He kissed her forehead.

“I'm going to keep you safe.”

His phone rang.

Detective Torres.

Alex answered.

“Torres?”

“We found something at Rosemont.”

“What?”

“A second accounting system.”

Alex stood.

“How bad?”

“Bad.”

“How bad?”

Torres paused.

“Your wife didn't uncover the scandal.”

Alex looked at Maya.

May you like

“She uncovered the entrance.”
