Chapter 6 - The Last Thing Evelyn Expected

Three months later, prosecutors formally charged Evelyn in connection with the financial scheme and the incidents at the estate.

The case would take time.

Alex accepted that.

Maya did too.

What neither accepted was allowing their lives to remain frozen around Evelyn.

They sold their interest in the old estate.

Alex didn't hesitate.

His uncle called.

“You're really selling?”

“Yes.”

“That house has belonged to the family for generations.”

Alex watched Chloe chase bubbles across the yard of their smaller temporary home.

“So?”

“You don't throw away history.”

Alex smiled faintly.

“I'm not.”

He looked at Maya.

“I'm choosing which part continues.”

The foundation changed too.

Alex declined the chairmanship.

Instead, an independent board was appointed.

New conflict-of-interest rules were established.

Every related-party transaction required disclosure.

Maya was asked whether she wanted a formal position.

She declined.

“I've had enough family foundations for one lifetime.”

Alex laughed.

“Fair.”

Owen kept cooperating with investigators and eventually found work elsewhere.

Joanne received a written apology from the new board.

And Rosemont Hall?

It went into receivership.

The property was eventually sold.

Evelyn's private monument—the thing she had risked everything to protect—was gone.

But the most difficult moment came when Evelyn requested permission to send Chloe a letter.

Alex brought the request to Maya.

“What do you think?”

Maya stared at it.

“What do you think?”

“I don't want her near Chloe.”

“Neither do I.”

Alex nodded.

“Then no.”

Maya studied him.

“You don't feel guilty?”

“Of course I do.”

“Because she's your mother?”

“Yes.”

He looked toward the backyard.

“But guilt isn't permission.”

Maya smiled slightly.

“That sounds like something a therapist told you.”

“It cost me two hundred dollars.”

“Then we should use it.”

He laughed.

For the first time in months, the laughter didn't feel forced.

That evening, Chloe helped Alex make dinner.

Helped.

Not worked.

She stood on a safe platform while Alex washed vegetables.

“Can I stir?”

“Yes.”

“Is it hot?”

“Yes.”

She immediately pulled her hand back.

Alex crouched beside her.

“What's the rule?”

“I don't touch hot things.”

“And?”

“I tell Mommy or Daddy.”

“And?”

Chloe grinned.

“I get dessert anyway.”

“Exactly.”

Maya leaned against the doorway.

“You're teaching excellent values.”

Alex nodded solemnly.

“Safety. Communication. Cake.”

“Mostly cake.”

“Cake is foundational.”

Chloe giggled.

Then she accidentally dropped a carrot.

Her smile disappeared.

She stared at Alex.

“Sorry.”

Alex picked it up.

“Why are you sorry?”

“I dropped it.”

“So?”

She looked confused.

“Grandma got mad when I dropped things.”

Alex put the carrot on the counter.

“Well, Daddy drops things constantly.”

Maya raised an eyebrow.

“Can confirm.”

Alex lowered his voice dramatically.

“Yesterday, I dropped an entire coffee.”

Chloe gasped.

“What happened?”

“I cleaned it up.”

“And then?”

“Nothing.”

Chloe stared.

“Nothing?”

“Nothing.”

Slowly, she smiled.

Then she deliberately dropped another carrot.

Alex stared at it.

Maya covered her mouth to hide a laugh.

Chloe looked at her father.

“Nothing?”

Alex sighed.

“You've discovered a dangerous loophole.”

Chloe burst out laughing.

May you like

And for Alex, that sound meant more than any court victory ever could.
