Chapter 4 - The Secret Arthur Never Expected Clara to Discover

Arthur disappeared for forty-eight hours.
That frightened Clara more than his phone calls.
Then Dante arrived with a folder.
“We found him.”
Dominic closed the study door.
“Where?”
“Montgomery estate.”
Clara looked up.
“Seraphina’s family home?”
Dante nodded.
“And he’s liquidating assets.”
Dominic frowned.
“How much?”
“Close to eighty million.”
Clara stood.
“He’s running.”
“Maybe,” Dante said.
“But that isn’t the interesting part.”
He placed another photograph on the table.
It showed Arthur meeting someone outside a private bank.
Clara recognized the man.
“Senator Hayes?”
Dominic nodded.
Dante continued.
“Caldwell has been funding Hayes through shell companies.”
Clara stared at him.
“For what?”
“Influence. Contracts. Regulatory protection.”
Dominic leaned back.
“And custody?”
Dante looked at Clara.
“We found emails between Caldwell and a private investigator.”
Clara’s stomach dropped.
“What emails?”
Dante hesitated.
Dominic said, “Tell her.”
“He was building a psychological profile against you.”
Clara went pale.
“He planned this?”
“Months ago.”
“Before Seraphina?”
“Yes.”
Clara sat slowly.
Arthur had not lost control at the gala.
He had been preparing to remove her.
Dominic crouched in front of her.
“Clara.”
She looked at him.
“He wanted my baby.”
“He wanted leverage.”
“Why?”
“Your inheritance.”
Understanding hit her.
The trust established by her grandmother had a provision transferring additional family assets when Clara became a mother.
Thirty million more.
Arthur had known.
“He needed custody,” she whispered.
Dominic nodded.
“And legal control.”
Clara’s grief disappeared beneath something stronger.
Anger.
“Get Evelyn.”
That afternoon, Clara sat before three Caldwell Industries board members.
Dominic remained outside.
This meeting belonged to her.
Chairman Alistair Dupont folded his hands.
“Mrs. Caldwell, we’re listening.”
Clara placed copies of the financial records before them.
“My husband has been stealing from me.”
One director frowned.
“This is a domestic issue.”
“No.”
Clara opened the next folder.
“He used the same shell corporations to hide company funds.”
Silence.
Alistair examined the documents.
“Where did you get these?”
“Does that change whether they’re real?”
“No.”
“Then verify them.”
Another director looked at her.
“What do you want?”
Clara answered without hesitation.
“Suspend Arthur as CEO pending investigation.”
Alistair leaned backward.
“He founded this company.”
“And he may destroy it.”
“He owns the largest voting block.”
“Not anymore.”
Three men stared at her.
Clara placed one final document down.
“My grandmother’s investment fund quietly purchased Caldwell shares for years.”
Alistair blinked.
“How many?”
“Eleven percent.”
“Combined with sympathetic shareholders—”
“Enough to force a vote.”
For the first time in her marriage, Clara watched powerful men realize she was not merely Arthur Caldwell’s wife.
Alistair slowly smiled.
“When do you want the board meeting?”
“Tomorrow.”
Dominic waited in the corridor.
When Clara emerged, he stood.
“How did it go?”
“They’re calling an emergency vote.”
Dominic’s smile appeared slowly.
“You did that?”
“Yes.”
“Without threatening anyone?”
“Imagine that.”
He laughed.
Clara started walking.
“Dominic?”
“Yes?”
“Why did you really come to the gala?”
He stopped.
“I told you.”
“To investigate Arthur?”
“And to see you.”
She turned.
“Why?”
Dominic was silent.
Then he said, “Because I heard you had stopped performing.”
“You investigated that too?”
“Yes.”
“That’s slightly terrifying.”
“I know.”
Clara folded her arms.
“Continue.”
“I wanted to know why.”
“And what did you discover?”
“That Arthur didn’t like you performing.”
Clara looked away.
“He said married women in his position didn’t belong on stages.”
Dominic’s voice became hard.
“You believed him?”
“For a while.”
“And now?”
Clara placed a hand over her stomach.
“Now I think I’ve spent too much time asking other people what I’m allowed to be.”
Dominic stepped closer.
“What do you want to be?”
She looked at him.
“Free.”
He nodded.
“Then start there.”
The emergency board meeting began at nine the next morning.
Arthur arrived at 9:07.
He stormed into the room.
“What the hell is this?”
Clara sat at the far end of the table.
Arthur stopped.
“You.”
“Good morning, Arthur.”
“You have no authority here.”
Alistair spoke.
“She has eleven percent of voting shares.”
Arthur stared at Clara.
“That money belonged to your grandmother.”
“It belongs to me.”
“You don’t understand this company.”
Clara held his gaze.
“I understand theft.”
Arthur turned to the board.
“You’re seriously listening to her?”
Clara slid the forensic audit across the table.
“They are listening to numbers.”
Arthur opened it.
His face drained of color.
Clara continued.
“The motion is to suspend Arthur Caldwell as CEO pending a full investigation.”
Arthur slammed both hands onto the table.
“This is my company!”
Alistair corrected him.
“It is a public company.”
The vote began.
One by one:
“Yes.”
“Yes.”
“Yes.”
Arthur stared at Clara as the final vote was cast.
“Yes.”
The chairman removed his glasses.
“Arthur Caldwell is suspended effective immediately.”
Arthur did not move.
Clara stood.
For years, he had made her feel small.
Now she walked past him without lowering her eyes.
Arthur whispered:
“This isn’t over.”
Clara stopped beside him.
“No.”
May you like
She looked toward the doors, where Dominic waited.
“It’s finally beginning.”
