Chapter 6 - The Ballroom Reckoning

Arthur did not attack Clara.
Instead, he invited New York to another party.
Three days later, every major journalist received an invitation to a press conference at Caldwell Tower.
Arthur planned to expose Dominic.
And Clara.
“He’s desperate,” Evelyn said.
Clara read Arthur’s public statement.
“Mrs. Caldwell has fallen under the influence of criminal associates who conspired to seize Caldwell Industries.”
Dominic stood across the room.
“Don’t go.”
Clara looked at him.
“I’m going.”
“He wants a spectacle.”
“Then he’ll get one.”
Dominic frowned.
“Clara.”
“He humiliated me in a ballroom because he knew I wouldn’t fight back.”
She put down the statement.
“I’m done giving him the version of me he expects.”
Caldwell Tower was packed.
Arthur stood before dozens of cameras.
Seraphina sat in the front row.
She looked less confident than usual.
Arthur began.
“My wife is vulnerable. She has been manipulated by a dangerous man—”
The doors opened.
Everyone turned.
Clara entered.
Dominic followed several steps behind her.
Arthur stopped speaking.
Clara walked to the front.
“You wanted to talk about me?”
Arthur’s smile returned.
“Clara. Perfect.”
“No.”
She took the microphone from the podium.
“Not perfect.”
The room became silent.
“But present.”
Arthur whispered:
“You have no idea what you’re doing.”
Clara looked at the cameras.
“My husband says Dominic Castillion destroyed his career.”
She turned toward Arthur.
“That’s false.”
She lifted a folder.
“These are forensic accounting records showing unauthorized transfers from Caldwell Industries.”
A second folder.
“These are documents containing my forged signatures.”
A third.
“And these are communications between Arthur Caldwell and a private investigator discussing how to portray me as mentally unstable in order to gain leverage over my unborn child and my inheritance.”
Arthur’s face went white.
“You can’t release those.”
“Why?”
“They’re confidential!”
Clara smiled sadly.
“So now privacy matters to you?”
Reporters shouted questions.
Arthur lunged toward the microphone.
Dominic immediately moved.
Clara raised one hand.
Dominic stopped.
Arthur saw it.
He saw that Dominic Castillion—the man half the city feared—had obeyed Clara with a gesture.
Something snapped inside him.
“You think he loves you?” Arthur shouted.
Clara went still.
Arthur laughed.
“He’s a criminal! He’ll get bored with you. You’re nobody without a man protecting you!”
Dominic’s jaw tightened.
Clara looked directly at Arthur.
“That is the difference between you.”
Arthur scoffed.
“What?”
“You needed me to feel small so you could feel powerful.”
She glanced toward Dominic.
“He never asked me to become smaller.”
Dominic’s expression softened.
Arthur looked toward Seraphina.
“Tell them!”
She did not move.
“Seraphina!”
She slowly stood.
“I’m done, Arthur.”
He stared.
“What?”
“I gave investigators everything.”
The room erupted.
Arthur looked as though she had slapped him.
Seraphina removed the sapphire necklace.
“The offshore payments. The emails. The gifts bought with company money.”
She placed the necklace on the table.
“You told me Clara was stealing from you.”
Clara stared at her.
Seraphina met her eyes.
“I believed him.”
Arthur whispered:
“You stupid—”
“Careful,” Dominic said.
Arthur spun toward him.
“You did this!”
Dominic finally stepped forward.
“No.”
Arthur pointed furiously.
“You took my wife!”
Dominic stopped directly in front of him.
“Clara was never yours to own.”
Silence.
Dominic lowered his voice.
“And that is the mistake you still don’t understand.”
Elevator doors opened behind the reporters.
Federal investigators entered.
Arthur’s expression collapsed.
One agent approached.
“Arthur Caldwell?”
Arthur backed away.
“No.”
“Sir, we have a warrant concerning financial fraud, obstruction and unlawful transfer of corporate funds.”
Camera flashes erupted.
Arthur looked toward Clara.
“Do something.”
Clara stared at him.
Three years earlier, those words would have controlled her.
Tonight they meant nothing.
“Goodbye, Arthur.”
Agents escorted him away.
The room fell silent.
Dominic looked at Clara.
“It’s over.”
She placed a hand over her belly.
“No.”
He frowned.
May you like
Clara smiled.
“Now it starts.”
