Chapter 3 - The Secret Behind Apartment 4A

Harper did not sleep that night.
She sat on the edge of her bed, staring at the message from Brandon until the words blurred.
I found you.
Two simple words.
Two words that transported her back eleven months.
Back to the apartment she escaped.
Back to the man who believed leaving him was impossible.
Her phone buzzed again.
Another message.
You really thought changing your name would erase me?
Harper immediately turned off the screen.
Her hands were shaking.
A knock came from the door.
She froze.
Nobody knocked at this hour.
Slowly, she approached the entrance and checked the security camera.
Dominic Russo stood outside.
For a moment, Harper considered ignoring him.
Then she remembered the message.
She opened the door but kept the chain locked.
"Why are you here?"
Dominic looked at her face.
He noticed the exhaustion.
The fear.
"You haven't slept."
"That's none of your business."
"No."
His voice remained calm.
"But Brandon Hale is."
Harper gripped the door.
"You said he asked people for help."
"He did."
"Who?"
Dominic looked away for a moment.
"People who specialize in finding others."
Her stomach tightened.
"Trackers?"
"Private investigators."
"And you know this because?"
"Because I know the man he contacted."
Harper studied him.
"You know Brandon?"
"No."
The answer came quickly.
"Then who?"
Dominic was silent.
That silence bothered her more than an answer.
"Dominic."
He finally looked at her.
"My world and Brandon's world overlap."
Harper's expression hardened.
"What world?"
He didn't answer.
And that told her everything.
She stepped back.
"You're not just some businessman."
"No."
"You're dangerous."
Dominic accepted the accusation without argument.
"Yes."
Harper expected denial.
She expected excuses.
Instead, he simply admitted it.
That frightened her more.
"Then why are you helping me?"
Dominic looked at her.
"Because Brandon Hale has a habit of believing people belong to him."
A pause.
"And I dislike men who confuse possession with love."
Harper didn't know what to say.
For years, everyone had told her Brandon was charming.
Successful.
Respected.
Nobody had ever described him the way Dominic just did.
"Why do you care?"
Dominic's expression changed slightly.
A memory crossed his face.
Something painful.
"I watched someone stay too long because they believed leaving was impossible."
Harper noticed the sadness beneath his words.
But before she could ask—
The elevator doors opened.
Two men stepped out.
Dominic immediately turned.
His entire posture changed.
The quiet neighbor disappeared.
The man standing there now was someone else.
Controlled.
Commanding.
The two men stopped.
"Mr. Russo."
Dominic didn't look away from them.
"Report."
One of them glanced at Harper.
"Not here."
Dominic's eyes became colder.
"Say it."
The man hesitated.
"We found Hale."
Harper stopped breathing.
Dominic looked at her.
"He knows you're in Boston."
A terrible silence followed.
Then Dominic said:
"You're moving."
Harper shook her head.
"No."
His eyebrows lowered.
"No?"
"I ran once."
She stepped forward.
"I spent eleven months being afraid of him. I changed everything about my life because of him."
Her voice trembled but she didn't stop.
"I'm not disappearing again."
Dominic watched her.
And something changed.
Respect.
"You want to fight?"
"No."
Harper looked him directly in the eyes.
"I want my life back."
For several seconds, Dominic said nothing.
Then he nodded.
"Good."
Harper frowned.
"Good?"
"Because running from Brandon is exactly what he expects."
He stepped away.
"Now he has to face someone who stopped running."
---
The next morning, Dominic revealed the truth.
Not everything.
But enough.
His name was Dominic Russo.
He owned several legitimate companies.
Security firms.
Real estate.
International investments.
But there was another side to him.
A side people whispered about.
A side that made criminals think twice.
Harper sat across from him in his private office.
A place hidden above one of his downtown buildings.
"You are telling me you're feared by criminals."
"Yes."
"And you expect me to trust you?"
"No."
That surprised her.
Dominic looked at her.
"Trust is earned."
For the first time, Harper almost smiled.
"You're very strange."
"So I've been told."
She looked around.
"Why are you really helping me?"
Dominic was quiet.
Then he answered.
"Because nobody should have to change their name just to survive."
May you like
Those words stayed with her.
