Chapter 2 - The Man Who Never Forgave Disrespect

The entire Dwarte Manor changed within an hour.

Nobody knew exactly what happened.

But everyone knew Rafael Dwarte was angry.

Not loud anger.

Not the kind that came with shouting.

The dangerous kind.

The kind where every person in the building suddenly became careful with their words.

Isabel found him in the library.

She walked in confidently.

"You heard about the little misunderstanding."

Rafael stood near the window.

A glass of whiskey untouched in his hand.

"Misunderstanding?"

She smiled.

"Marisol exaggerated."

Rafael turned.

"Did she?"

"Of course."

Isabel walked closer.

"She is emotional. Some employees don't understand boundaries."

Rafael studied her.

"Did you cut her hair?"

Isabel paused.

Only for a second.

But Rafael noticed.

"Yes."

No apology.

No regret.

"She needed to look more appropriate."

Rafael stared at her.

"Appropriate."

"She represents this household."

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"She represents herself."

Isabel frowned.

"You are seriously upset over a maid's haircut?"

Rafael placed the glass down.

And that was when Isabel realized something.

She had made a mistake.

A very expensive mistake.

"This was never about hair."

Rafael stepped closer.

"It was about you believing money gave you permission to humiliate someone."

Isabel laughed nervously.

"Rafael, please."

"No."

One word.

Enough to silence her.

"You don't get to call cruelty professionalism."

Her face changed.

"Are you choosing her over me?"

Rafael looked at her.

"No."

A pause.

"I'm choosing my principles over you."

The silence afterward was brutal.

---

The next morning, Rafael called everyone into the main hall.

Staff members stood quietly.

Isabel arrived wearing a perfect dress and a confident expression.

She expected an apology.

Instead, Rafael looked at her and said:

"Pack your belongings."

The room went silent.

Isabel blinked.

"What?"

"You heard me."

"You cannot be serious."

"I am."

She laughed.

"You are ending our engagement because of a maid?"

Rafael's expression didn't change.

"No."

He looked around the room.

"I am ending it because I discovered the person I was going to marry enjoyed hurting someone who couldn't fight back."

Nobody spoke.

Isabel's face turned pale.

"You are humiliating me."

Rafael looked at her.

"Now you understand the feeling."

---

Later that afternoon, Marisol found Rafael in the garden.

She kept her distance.

"You didn't have to do that."

He looked at her.

"Yes, I did."

"People will think I caused trouble."

"They will think the truth."

She looked away.

"I don't want special treatment."

Rafael nodded.

"Good."

That surprised her.

"Good?"

"I don't respect people who want special treatment."

He stepped closer.

"I respect people who deserve respect."

Marisol looked at him.

"Why do you care?"

Rafael was silent for a moment.

Then he answered honestly.

"Because I watched everyone in this house walk past you for three years."

His eyes moved toward the manor.

"They saw a uniform."

A pause.

"I saw someone who kept this place running."

Marisol didn't know what to say.

Nobody had ever said that before.

Rafael continued.

"And I should have noticed sooner."

For the first time since the scissors touched her hair, Marisol felt something other than anger.

She felt seen.

But neither of them knew yet that Isabel Croft leaving Dwarte Manor would not end the problem.

It would only begin the war.
