Chapter 6 - The Truth Everyone Had Been Hiding

The evidence arrived at midnight.

Marcus placed a folder on Rafael's desk.

"Everything is here."

Rafael opened it.

Contracts.

Messages.

Financial records.

Proof that Vincent had manipulated Isabel from the beginning.

But one document made Rafael stop.

Marisol's employee file.

Older than expected.

He looked confused.

"Why is her file here?"

Marcus hesitated.

"Because she wasn't hired randomly."

Rafael looked up.

"What?"

Marcus continued.

"Your father personally approved her employment."

Silence.

"My father?"

Marcus nodded.

"Three years ago."

Rafael leaned back.

"Why?"

The answer came from an old letter inside the file.

A letter written by his father before his death.

Rafael read it slowly.

"A house is not measured by the people who sit at the table. It is measured by the people who keep the table standing."

His father's handwriting continued.

"Marisol Vega reminds me of the kind of person this family used to protect."

Rafael stopped reading.

Because he understood.

His father had seen what everyone else ignored.

Marisol.

---

He found her in the garden.

The rain had stopped.

The entire property smelled like wet earth and flowers.

"Marisol."

She turned.

"You look serious."

"I found something."

She waited.

"Your employment wasn't an accident."

She frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"My father hired you."

Her eyes widened.

"Your father?"

"He knew about you."

Marisol shook her head.

"I never met him."

"No."

Rafael held up the letter.

"But he knew exactly who you were."

She read the words.

Her expression changed.

"I don't understand."

Rafael looked at her.

"I think he saw your value before I did."

Marisol became quiet.

Then:

"Your father sounds like a good man."

"He was."

A pause.

"Better than me."

She looked at him.

"No."

Rafael looked surprised.

"No?"

"You are becoming better."

The simplicity of her answer affected him more than he expected.

---

That evening, Vincent made his final mistake.

He came to Dwarte Manor expecting Rafael to surrender.

Instead, he found every family board member waiting.

"You can't do this," Vincent said.

Rafael placed the documents on the table.

"You are removed from every Dwarte operation."

Vincent laughed.

"You think these people will choose you over me?"

Nobody answered.

Because they already had.

Vincent looked around.

Then at Marisol.

"You did all this."

Marisol stepped forward.

"No."

Her voice was calm.

"You did."

Vincent stared.

"You humiliated me."

"No."

She looked at him.

"You revealed yourself."

Silence.

For the first time, Vincent had no answer.

---

Weeks later, Dwarte Manor felt different.

Not because the house changed.

Because the people inside it did.

Marisol was no longer treated like someone passing through.

She was invited to family dinners.

Her opinions were requested.

Her name was remembered.

And Rafael?

He was different too.

Less distant.

Less controlled.

One evening, he found her in the ballroom.

The same place where Isabel had cut her hair.

Marisol noticed where he was looking.

"You remember."

"I remember everything."

She touched her shorter hair.

"It grew back."

Rafael smiled slightly.

"It suits you."

She looked at him.

"You hated it before?"

"No."

"When?"

"When?"

"When did you first notice me?"

Rafael was quiet.

Then:

"The first year you worked here."

She looked surprised.

"You knew who I was?"

"Yes."

"Then why didn't you say anything?"

"Because everyone else ignored you."

A pause.

"I thought if I ignored you too, you would have peace."

Marisol smiled.

"That was a terrible plan."

May you like

"I know."
